Scratched the itch again this weekend.
Went aboard my neighbor RIch's ride on saturday at 9am. Decent NW wind @15 kept us on the LI side and set up at 35 feet and had instant life. First 6 crab that went down on the jig brought ornery almost keeper size fish to the boat. Fished for 3 hours and eventually had a total of 11 keepers come up, along with countless hard fighting shorts. His machine read 57 degree water temps. L
With plenty of left over crab, and supposed lighter winds on sunday, I planned another trip with Fish4Me and another pal. At the ramp at 8am, We were greeted to a rather sloppy Sound with not so light 15-20 kts NE winds. So we went back to the scene of the crime and the action picked up right where we left them. Rhodan worked pretty hard to keep us on the spot. John quietly snuck the first keeper at 18 inches within the first 20 minutes of fishing. I got in on the action on the jig again with a 17, followed by another Fish4Me keeper at 17. We traded keeper fish back and forth for a little while mixing in plenty of nice shorts, and John managed the very occasional micro "Drewfish". The wind finally let up a little before noon and we called it a day at 12:30 with 8 keepers on board, and the fish still biting. Cruised back with the Sound unrecognizable from just a few hours before. Did see birds working on the way in, but resisted the urge to jig up bass/blues.
After clean up/fillet, I took a ride back to the ramp to discard the carcasses, and saw a father/son duo filleting fish at the dock, one of which was a monster slob 23 inch tog.
Best time of the year for us with the Tog fishing addiction.
