Had a shot to fish on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Only had 2 hours so we stayed close to the inlet and fished at 40 feet. The conditions went from pretty good to lake Loing Island Sound. We had decent action with a fair number of shorts, and the jig did some damage getting 4 out of the 5 keepers we managed before sunset. Big fish went 19 1/2 inches. Water temp was 49/50. The tide switch had the decent bite die off, so we tried a 50 foot piece that only held shorts before we took a few awesome sunset photos, and called it a trip.

Weather was just nice enough on Sunday with wind predicted to kick up before noon, so we set out at 7am and shot out to 11B considering how decent the conditions. Only one other boat out there with us. Set up in 60 ft, and gave it 15 minutes without a touch. Water temp was 47 degrees.
Reset at 45 ft and found good action. We had a few togs that pushed 15 1/2 inches, and even a decent black Sea Bass, but couldn't find keepers. The tide picked up and the fish started getting smaller, so I made the call to head back to the 40 ft spot where we have done well in the past.
Within a minute of heading South, the wind started gusting hard, and we got lucky not to get caught out there. By the time we set the spot lock again, the wind was an easy 20 gusting to 30mph. We had white caps and 2-3 foot waves less than 2 miles from shore. We stuck it out there for 45 minutes, getting decent action, and 2 mystery togs that were hard fighting drag pullers that shook off the hooks halfway up. The ones that got away. Finally at 10:30 we called it with the rain starting to fall. Back at the ramp, there were still a few trailers left, and we did see a few filleted togs in the shallow water.

My daughter and I have a Montauk trip next week if Mother Nature allows, but for us on the North Shore with falling temps and water already under 50, that was the final trip of the year for the DrewsCrews. Decent season with some trolling motor repairs along with some trailer repair mixed in. Boat ran great! Fishing wise, slower for us with Bass compared to season past, OK fluke action, plenty of by catch weakfish, and some great porgy trips. Blackfish is what we live for, and there is no complaints this year as we got out every weekend. Time for some maintenance and cleaning and cover it up for the winter.

For us on the LIS, the blackfish bite is usually over and once we get under 45 degrees. I'm under the impression that the fish go deeper or head offshore. Yes, we still were catching fish and we usually see the lighter colored less active fish as temps get lower, and we haven't seen that yet, but this weeks high temps aren't getting over 45, so water temps are sure to go south quickly. Can we maybe go out next weekend and bend a rod, yeah maybe, but not really worth it for me.
