Had to give it a go with opening day tog.
A few trailers at the ramp by 7am. Made the call to head east instead of north to CT with the building east wind.
Ride to the Smithtown Bay Artificial Reef wasn't that bad, some chop but we were able to stay on plane, setting the trolling motor by 7:30. There were already 8 boats in the area. Spot #1 in 30 ft had a few pecks and pulls but wasn't what we wanted so after a 1/2 hour we got away from the fleet and tried a rocky spot in 20ft. Decent action for close to an hour but they were all big porgies, fun to catch but not what we wanted. Went back towards the fleet which had over a dozen boats now and settled on some nice hard bottom in ranging from 30-40 feet. Chummed up with lots of crab legs but could not get a bite going as the wind picked up and the rain started to fall. Jogged around with the trolling motor and tried different spots on the structure but all we could muster was the occasional tug with nothing to show for it.
Made the call to head back west and had a decent ride with the following sea still able to stay on plane. Tried the rocks at the inlet and managed to finally see a small tog come up as the rain kept getting worse so we pulled the plug by 11:30.
At the ramp, still saw most of the other trailers still there figuring they went to CT, but they weren't back yet. One gent who came in as we pulled the boat said he tried Eatons and Llyods with occasional shorts and porgies, but said his ride back to the ramp was very rough and borderline dangerous.
Shame we didn't have saturdays weather.
