Key fobs

New Angler
Recently acquired a 4x4 after years of using an ancient van, because the knees said so (can't take walking in anymore). And I would just slip a old school key in my waders, etc. and take care of business. However, the new ride has a key fob and now I have to deal with using something I can't take just the key portion anymore - door won't lock if I stash the fob in the truck. I've been bagging the fob but I know with my luck it's only a matter of time before I soak the thing in the suds.

What do you guys do with the fobs? Anyone have a good way of protecting besides ziplocks? Something low profile? Anyone know of getting a waterproof fob? I don't always get wet but when the next storm hits I'll probably get soaked hitting it before it makes landfall and that's when I'll wreck mine. I had no idea how much this would annoy me and miss the days of keeping a spare key in the wallet, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Zip-Locs good & cheap, but if you want something "nicer" to to an outdoor store and buy a cell phone bag for kayakers that hands around your neck...

I’d beat the heck out of my key fob and never have a problem. When I surfcast I keep it obviously in a pocket but I have waders on. I am on a boat. I keep it wherever I can find dry storage but it does sometimes get wet. And right now my key fob is soaked because my shorts are soaked from cleaning a boat.

Put key fob in Faraday cage inside the truck. I'm assuming you can still lock the car with a door keypad? Or you also have a key?

Faraday cage! Excellent and thanks.

Glad to help. Most people don't realize that cars that don't require turnkey (fobs and only start button) are really susceptible to theft.
Car thieves scan the airwaves to try and pick up those signals within your house, then clone them.
They then drive off in your high end luxury vehicle without a confrontation.

Put those fobs in a Faraday overnight. Neither of my cars can be started without a key, my Dad's last Lincoln MKC could though.

Yes, but I was trying to keep it as light as possible. I had no issue with wrapping the fob in bags and using that in the pocket, but one time at Mecca I kept trying to stay on a submerged rock (and failed, lol) and having something bulky irritated me when I was casting. When I finally gave up and crawled up to the lot I found to my horror it was damp even after a double bagging. Any where else I'd use a waterproof bad for the phone and then use the phone app to pop the doors, but if I go full ham in wild surf, I leave the phone in the car. I'm still trying to find someone who will make an flat key I can put on my old dog chain and not have to worry about this nonsense.

Only thing is I have a Toyota Taco and if it senses the fob nearby, it will open a locked door if you place your hand on one of the door handles. JPD mentioned a Faraday cage which is something that completely blocks the radio transmissions from the fob. I tried one of the RF proof bags that comes with the E-Z Pass, but that isn't enough attenuation to mask the signal, so I need something with more shielding to stash the thing in the truck. I had a small microwave in the truck when I was camping and that's a perfect Faraday cage, and I used the small pull-out key that comes in a Toyota fob to lock up.

I wear a dog tag chain so my wife can collect when I drown off of the rocks, (no nursing home for me) and had hoped to stash the key on it, but the pull-out key is so small and annoying, I had to use the pocket in the dry top. It's small and sharp enough to promptly wear away at the bag and was starting to poke through the fabric of the pocket. It's this kind to annoying crap that makes miss my old rust bucket and it's no-technology build. Only thing was no 4x4 and it was up to 4 soda cans on the exhaust and a roll of duct tape for the body, so...
