Hit the edges to break it up and dont try to be Thor a little goes a long wayOh boy. ?
Wader. it’s compacted gravel.
But I do think a tool that can slice down and then separate with arm motion, and then I can shovel easily would work. Pick axe is good too. I’ll try the sledge hammer also if I angle it correctly it could separate some chucks

No why do you ask. He is dealing with compacted gravel. As Cany said ...have you ever tried a pick ax on asphalt - concrete? You'll wear yourself out within 20 minutes.
Same thing for a sledge hammer.
Trust me. I tried both before I went for the jackhammer.
Why do you think highway crews use them when doing road work?

I'm curious. If the hammer broke it up nicely when going through the asphalt then how would you know that the compacted stone underneath was nearly as hard and would have been difficult to remove with a shovel or ax?missed the word gravel - read driveway apron - saw a concrete driveway in the picture & went with that
When I removed mine - the compacted stone underneath was nearly as hard as the asphalt - would have had difficulty removing it with a shovel or ax - but the hammer broke it up when going through the asphalt.
Good luck.
