Landscaping

From a dumb Urbanite, can you get an edible banana off those things or are they only ornamental?
If the season were longer - yes.

They require 10 months of frost free conditions to produce fully mature fruit. You don't get that here. They start coming up around April (they are cut to the ground after the first frost knocks 'em back).

I've generally seen the fruit stalks begin developing around September/October. At that point the light is fading & the temperatures are dropping.

They sort of have the structure of a really large piece of celery. All water on the interior. So the freeze freezes that & they are done for the seaon at which point I cut them down to about 8 inches for the winter. They reappear each Spring with a couple of "baby trees" & over the summer get to the 12 to 20 feet in height.

They'd definately produce mature fruit down @MOJOE 's place.

What I get are miniture unrip bananas about 3 to 4 inches in length.

Made accommodation for the 120 year old Oak Tree on the right side! ?

While doing my fall transplanting stuff from my woods and the "24/7 Nursery Across the Lane", I've been noticing high-bush blueberry plants in heavily wooded spots with little sunlight. These bushes will never flower and yield fruit, so I figured it was my duty to dig 3 up today and move them to a very blueberry friendly part of my yard. Our Professor of Landscaping, @Chevy1 , cautioned me not to do any pruning on these so I'll see what's up with them next spring.

As I was doing this I noticed that our Boomerang Lilac needed a "trim". Had to laugh while pruning, as there were new blooms starting up. I guess our yo-yoing temps lately had the poor thing very confused...

Crocus are in full bloom with the first honeybee of the year
I started the landscaping season today too, noticed the daffodils had started to sprout, but more surprisingly, many of the day lilies also started to send up shoots. That's at least 3 weeks earlier than "normal"!!

Visited the "Across the Street 24/7 Free Nursery" and came home with 2 white birches and 2 balsam fir, all around 3' tall. The balsams were placed in the future Xmas Tree plot.

Ended the day with the 1st fire of the season and a cognac cocktail...
