Hi all,
My son Charles and I decided yesterday to make one more trip for tog.
I told my son see if you can get crabs so he called around and our local bait store had them.
My son called me back and said he dropped off a bushel of crabs and 4 dz asians that the bait store gave him for nothing, he was going to toss them out because he was closing for the season.
This morning we packed the boat up and headed to the boat launch, it was cold, no wind but it was cold.
Put the boat in and had to clean most of the leaves that accumulated over the lasT week, I will be glad when they are all done falling.
Fired the motor right up, motor ran great all season, it pays to keep it maintained.
Headed out of the harbor at a slow pace, my son was marking fish so I tossed over a small deadly dick and immediately hooked up with a small schoolie, in the boat and released.
On our way again and bam another one, so we decided to sit and fool around with the schoolies, we were catching them almost every cast the bass were getting bigger with every cast.
By now I'm getting warmed up and decided its beat to head out and go to our fishing spot which was middle ground light, so I took one last cast and bamm! I get stopped dead in my tracks.
This fish is stripping line off and doesn't stop for at least 100 feet I am worried because we are close to the docks, I tighten the drag up and the fight is on.
Ten minutes later my sons asked if he should get the net, I'm not sure yet what it is so told yea, it might be a good idea, I get the fish close to the boat it comes up and rolls, Its a nice striper.
My son reaches down and nets the fish, swings the fish into the boat and the net breaks off at the handle, we both laughed, I said to my son the fish ain't that heavy, don't know if the cold played a part but anyways I am getting a new one for christmas he he.
We measure the fish and its 34 inches take some pics and release it, we fished for another 20 minutes but no more like this one.
We head out to middle ground it's like a lake out there and in no time we are at our destination. with a burlap bag full of crabs I pour them into 2 5 gallon pails.
I can see why the bait store gave them away, most were dead so I decided to cut and chum as soon as we find a spot.
We anchored up in 50 feet of water, I have cut lots of crabs and start tossing them over, there were other boats out there maybe 10 at most, some were hooking up but nothing was being kept.
We stayed in this spot for 30 minutes then moved, it seemed like no matter where we dropped the hook nothing was doing, then the snow showers started it was like the fog rolled in.
We caught small tog here and there but no keepers.
After moving 3 more times and just keep getting small fish we decided to head in around 2:30 pm and see if the stripers were still in the Milford Harbor.
I told my son to put the hammer down and clean the engine up on the way in.
We get back in no time and when we are in the harbor I toss out a 6 inch deadly dick in green silver, halfway in I get hit big time, drag is screaming and I can't stop it, I tell my son to back down
because the fish is headed towards the floating docks, I fight this fish for another 5 maybe ten minutes but it makes it to the floating docks and breaks off, wow I would have like to have seen that fish. People on the dock were watching me fight the fish and as soon as I lost it they all went damn, what a shame, I said yea, I know, right.
Well that's it for the season, next week I put the boat away, I'm going to sell it come spring, hoping to pick up something bigger and newer. lol
All stay safe and Happy Holidays.
