Black Hole Challenger Bank 691UL

Fresh off my tackle review testing thread, very low miles, only driven to Cholera on weekends by a senior citizen. Flawless condition. As discussed/described here in a few posts: New IT&T Board Feature - Hands-on Tackle Reviews 2019/2020

For light bucktailing of fluke this it is a KILLER stick. 1-3oz is its super-sweet spot. You know, I really never could see the point of bringing along a lighter spinner on my ocean fluking adventures. But now I've seen the light, as I've had a few trips this season that I did really well with this rod, while my boat buddies, sticking with their bait casting outfits, really didn't catch all that well.

Days like that made a believer out of me! Spinning is a great tool for those days that call for it. Makes it much less frustrating dealing with no-wind mid-Summer days. I'll be carrying a spinning rig every trip out there, from now on. Its really one more tool in the bag. . .

On this rod the longer than average rear grip is very comfortable, what with its extended length. I rest it tight to my arm and use it to kind of "pivot" during my long jigging sessions. This takes the load off my wrist, and believe me, this makes a big difference at the end of the day. It caries all Fuji K-guides in polished silver - the first three are double-braced for strength. It is a very attractive stick! Balances perfectly with any 2000 to 4000 series spinning reel. So if you want a light spinning rod, with known superior build quality and PROVEN performance, this one will fill the bill, at a very attractive "Lep Special Price."

Since this rod is just taking up space in my garage its time to move it to a loving new owner. I believe the list price on it is $305 plus NJ tax, so I was thinking around $220 would be a fair price, comes to $100 off on an as-new stick . . . You can reach me by PM, which on this site is called "Start a Discussion."

Hi Pete, Yes, I did love fishing it! But that's not the "Big Picture." The whole tackle review thread concept is not about replacing one piece of tackle with another. Its really about finding tackle appropriate for the sort of fishing done by many around LI, fishing it, and giving my impression of its overall performance.

The first stick was the Harrier Slow jigger - that one got the "full monte" treatment. Fished it hard, gave my impression of its performance, and moved it to another fisher for his enjoyment.

The same now with this Black Hole rod. Fished it this season - including beating on giant Peconic porgies, gave my impressions in writing, and now its time to move it to a new owner, so that I can fish the new Shimano Grappler Type J that George and I sourced last week from John @ Trophy Tackle (as written up in the Tackle Review thread). That one will also move along eventually, to make way for, well, who knows what?

I can't say now, that's for sure. I have to move this tackle, there's only so much room left in my basement and garage for new stuff, believe me. And keeping all this equipment would just deprive a new owner from enjoying the final disposition of that tackle.

The concept here is to identify new tackle, source it, fish it, evaluate it over at least a half season (10 trip minimum OF USE is my self-imposed credential), and then sell it off at steep discount, to make way for the next new thing.

This is a win, win, win, for all concerned. Frankly, I get to pick out a new-tech rod/reel/other piece of equipment (win #1 - for me, of course! Face it, I like new shiny new things!), I'll fish it hard, give my views as to the viability and overall worth of item (Win #2 - for the readers of this column - might confirm their thinking regarding acquiring the item for their use. Or perhaps save someone from making a big mistake), and then the next guy gets to pick it up for much less than a brand new version would cost - and that would be Win #3. Pretty good idea, no?

Someone is gonna get a real nice high-end factory Black Hole rod here, for a good price. The truth is I ain't pocketing the money. It will be invested into the next new chatcha that we will look at on that thread. I think its kind of a nifty thing we're doing here, truth be told. :)

And here’s a thought. That $100 savings on the Black Hole? It would pay a large part of the cost of a brand-new Tsunami Evict 2000/3000 spinner, or most of the cost of a new Penn Spinfisher VI. Or a Daiwa BG. Any of the three would be a terrific match for this rod. I do LOVE my Evict 2000, so there’s that . . .

I must say I picked up a Penn Clash 3000 a few weeks back and I’m absolutely loving it.

The all new Clash II? That’s a NICE reel! With the greatly improved gearing and other upgrades, its an excellent choice.

G2 Outfitters drift bag 84". Used one time, like new condition. Pick up Nassau county LI. $ 80.00. I can send pics if needed.
Thanks

That's an excellent reel for our local waters. I believe Daiwa no longer offers the Lexa with that low gear ratio. Makes this a great choice for light/medium black fishing. GLWTS!
