Let's hear your favorite fluke set ups.

Finally made it to the site!! My favorite set-up is to get on a boat that can put you on the meat! I've heard the Lep, Theresa V and Lucky Charms are pretty good at that! :cool: Give me my Shimano and ugly stick and I'm good! (y)
 
Well, I know the first two boats are pretty solid on the fluke front. But what is this "Lucky Charms" you speak of? :p

I just signed up to this site yesterday. Thanks for the heads up Lep. Any how for my fishing I am partial to Abu 4600 and about any med. action pole under 7 feet. I guess I like a Med. Light Trevala best. The shorter the better as the fish is close to the boat for easy netting when I fish alone.I hate those 6 lb.fish that are just out of reach of the net as often happens with a longer pole. Any pole that handles 4 0z. jigs comfortable works as I seldom fish over 50 ft. This is a great site. treemanjb
 
Depends where and how Im fishing...2oz and under Cts SBD700, BJ700L ,UC Micro jigger M and UMBX by phenix..
2 to 4 oz step up to the CTS BJ700..SBD701..UC Micro H or XH..over 4 oz I tend to chicken rig and will fish SBD 701 UC Micro XH ,XXH...I like a hard tip deep bend rod...Rod thats designed to jig..
 
I’ll put my two go to set ups against anything. For the lighter side my Capt. Neil built Impact MH with my Gen 1 Revo a Winch (continuously restored and cared for someone on this site) is amazing with less than 2 oz’s-I’ve caught ALOT of fish on that set up
And my 2nd baby is my CN702, also built by my buddy CN! That rod is paired Diawa Costal
Zillion that has also been “souped up” by the same person as my Revo is a combo that allowed me to catch my only double digit fluke on my favorite boat out of Montauk, the Grand Slam
That was maybe the best day I’ve had on the water and is my Avatar for a reason
 
I will have to quit fishing and go live in a cloistered monastery . I got a prize comment for having the worst maintained reel ever. From Who??? treemanjb
 
Anyone have any blank/rod suggestions for deep water bucktailing up to 5-6 OZ? I too like stiff tip shorter rods in the 6'6" or 7' range. I currently use one of the Tsnuami slow pitch XH rods but its 7'6" which is a bit too long for me. Rod will be paired with the Daiwa Lexa 300 I use already.

I am partial to very light and sensitive blanks, I've looked into the Jigging World Black Demons already but I want to see if theres anything else out there
 
jigging world are first generation Phenix recon blanks...very nice blanks ,,,but very thin wall and I wont say easy to snap but I stopped building on them because of breakage ..

I have walked up and down isles of different tackle shops looking at fluke rods...Daiwa seems to have the best ones ...on the custom front CTS & UC offer some outstanding blanks ..
 
SS12 - have you seen the Shimano Trevala “S” jigging rods in M or MH? I’m referring to the green rods, not the 1st-gen gray ones. I have a few versions of these - and all are truly sweet sticks. Look on line for TVSC63M and TVSC63MH. If you like what you see, nearly every Tackle Shop carries that Shimano line-up. Short of a true custom rod, these are about as good as it gets in a factory piece.
 
Lep - I've seen them and held them but I have heard mixed reviews from people who have used it in the same application as I do. I don't mind going the custom route, I'd rather have something the way I want it than to compromise.

With so many blank choices its tough to find one without feeling them all first. I plan to have the rod acid wrapped as well.
 
Ditto Lep on the Shimao Trevala S jigging rods paired with a Daiwa Lexa 400 with power handle. Great for ocean fluking to 80 feet including when drift and /or moon tides require fluke balls up to 10 ounces. But for ultralight skinny water fluking i used Shimano Stradic C1000 w/ St Croix 4 1/2 footer and my Penn Clash CLA 2000 with the St Croix 5 footer. before u doubt , I have a PB 7lbs fluke using these ultra light set ups as well as blue fish to 6 lbs and keeper striped bass.

I'll try and ask him directly tomorrow at WM but if you have any suggestions beforehand, much appreciated...
 
Lastly, for light/medium spinning fluking , I use a Capt. Neil custom 7 foot Maximizer #1 spinning rod paired with an Okuma Helios in the 10/12 lb line class.
This set up has put away tons of ocean fluke to 60 feet when u have slowwwww or no drift conditions and nothing else works. Say hello to Capt Neil tomorrow at WM Show.
 
SS12 - Yeah, umm, I fail to see anything even close to an issue with the Trevala S rods. Beautifully made rods that fish as good as they look - especially for the relatively modest cost Shimano asks. The truth is that I have thousands invested in custom fluke rods, and STILL will be bringing my new-to-me TVSC63MH on every trip to the deep this coming season. I had been using a custom CTS BS703 for this app, but its just too much rod for fluking in my area, even with an 8oz sinker. I then segued to a Daiwa PRSS63H Proteus - and even that is too much rod - in my opinion.

So when I broke my Jigging World Silver Bullet 200g this past Summer, I had JW replace it with the slightly more stout TVSC63MH - and so finally, that looks like the winner for those rougher days when 5 or 6oz is still too light (though just right for this rod). It is good to that magic 8oz sinker - or jig - that I find works on those crazy windy days offshore.

If you want a "close to custom," with a spiral wrap no less, that will meet your lure weight spec, then check out the brandy-new JW Ghost Hunter 200gram slow pitch jigger. I saw this rod for the first time a few weeks ago - and was VERY impressed. I would have bought it, but it was too close to my new Trevala S MH, and so I just couldn't justify dropping the jing on such a similar rod. The Ghost Hunter blank appears to me to be considerably tougher than the Silver Bullet rods.

It would have been nice to complete my Ghost Hunter collection, as I already have (and LOVE!) the 150gram and 300gram versions, but I couldn't bring myself to buy yet another rod that might not sail with me most of the time.

Chinacat - unfortunately, Neil doesn't have a blank like that in his inventory. He can get anything you want, but that fluke-killing slow/mod action is not something that is commonly available from the well-known blank wholesalers. You can certainly find such blanks out there, if you know where to look, but its doubtful Neil has one at the house, ready to go.

PJII - I would say hi to Neil, except I'm not heading to the Show tomorrow. Some other boating/fishing matters on the agenda for tomorrow. I WILL, however be heading to the monster show in Jersey on the 16th. If you see just two shows, then Ward Melville and the Jersey shows are definitely the ones to catch. But only one of those is FREE, of course!
