No surprise due to my moderating a couple of the forums, but I am a long time shooter and fairly recent (only since 2003, deer hunter.) Have fired M16s, M60s and the Ma Deuce on auto. Yup, thy were fun, especially the Ma deuce. Still own one AR and an M1 Carbine. Will readily admit that on the range I prefer shooting them as unlike my levers or bolts I don't have to rearrange these ageing ligaments and bones after working the action after each shot. So far, none of my weapons, pistols included, have jumped out of the house and shot anybody (not counting deer.)
Living here in Newyorkistan, I was rather recently forced to sell off my standard capacity magazines for the above two firearms as well as for one of my pistols, to conform with state laws that will do little to prevent a multiple victim scenario. Reduce the casualty count perhaps, but tell that to the parents of a child killed by a six shot pistol and not a 30 round equipped semi auto rifle. Let us not forget that the 2002 DC sniper and his "protege" fired only single shots out of the trunk of an old car using an AR15 to kill people. I am fairly certain that there are studies regarding the fatality percentage of a 5.56 (.223) bullet strike vs. the hit from a 12 gauge slug or 200 grain .35 Remington bullet from a common lever action deer rifle. Many will not use an AR for deer hunting because of the fear of merely wounding the animal. Most of the deer I have harvested with my shotgun were dead within 10 feet of where they were shot. Yes, its all about shot placement. And do I really miss my 20 and 30 round magazines for my AR and carbine? Not really. I miss the pistol grip more, which actually makes the AR a little unwieldy to handle, which was the point.
Although some psychiatrists are postulating that the majority of the mass murderers were not mentally ill, and that the El Paso and Dayton murderers would not "qualify" as such, where is it considered normal to compile kill and rape lists and to post ethnocentric hatred with murderous intent? The POS in Dayton had been suspended from school for violent leanings and yet no "red flag" was legally available to be submitted to the FBI database to insure he could never legally purchase a firearm. Hell, he shouldn't have been allowed to buy a knife or bow and arrow. What "honest" psychiatrist is going to regularly admit that his patients can not ever be cured of their disorders and must always be drugged? I would have to do research, but most states do not submit mental health records to the FBI for inclusion in NICS checks. The United States Air Force didn't even do it with a former service member who committed multiple murders at that church in Texas.
Then again, many multiple murderers obtained their weapons of destruction by stealing from their parents or others, or through straw purchases. Gun bans will not work as with a country acknowledging over 300 million firearms (and probably twice that) from ten to fifteen MILLION AR15s and a populace of over 300 million, I don't like the idea of being relegated to a compound bow knowing all the criminals and gang members also turned in their firearms.
