Fluke Whisperer
Angler
This report is for Saturday the 15th.
My son Charles and I decided to fish middle ground light after hearing good reports, our previous plan was to head east towards Niantic.
We headed out of Milford harbor around 7am and steamed over to Middle Ground Light.
Upon arrival we saw lots of boats so we dis some side scanning looking for good structure.
We settled on a spot that looked good and wwe were seeing plenty of fish on the bottom so we started on this spot.
It didn't take long before the first bite and it turned out to be a 17 in porgy, we were literally catching porgies on every drop, I have never seen porgies this size.
We were using frozen crabs from our previous trip and saved the fresh crabs for later,a good thing because we couldn't get away from the porgies.
We made several moves and each time nothing but porgies. we kept 4 up to 18 " and moved to one last stop.
The tide was incoming the current not too bad, we used 2 oz jigs which seemed to hold bottom pretty good.
On our last stop we finally started to catch some tog, shorts mind you but it gave us hope, just had to wade thru the constant porgy bites and wait for that tug that told you it was a tog.
In the Meantime we saw splashes and fish breaking all around the boats that were near us, nobody seemed to care and to be honest neither did we. Not sure what they were so I can only guess as to what they were.
We went through half a bushel of frozen crabs and had no choice but to use the fresh ones, on my first drop with a fresh crab I hooked into a nice cbass about 18" and let it go.
Second drop hooked up and knew immediately what it was, got the fish up and landed a nice 17 " tog, right into the cooler.
Then the porgies took over again, after some very frustrating hook ups, we moved one last time, seems like we couldn't get away from them.
Last spot and 20 minutes of catching..............wait for it................porgies my son hooks up big time, I thought he had the bottom at first but he was using a light rig.
As I waited by his side to get a look at his catch I kept thinking dog fish lol, finally I could see a nice tog and when he came up I netted him.
Dropped him in the boat and gave my son the high five the tog was 6lbs on the boga grip and 20+ inches.
Thinking that the tog have finally moved in we kept at it but it wasn't to be, Porgies,Porgies,Porgies, up to 4lbs unbelievable.
We packed it in around 4pm and headed back in, my son spotted birds working off of stratford and we stopped to investigate, lots of peanut bunker but no fish so we headed back to the barn.
Later today I found out while we were at Middle ground the bass and blues were tearing up the peanut bunker at the mouth of the housatonic river, my brother was there, said everyone was going crazy trying to get in on the action.
One last thing before I finish, Mark (kidcochiese) Gary was next to us with his boat the Preacher. Good to him back on the water again.
Tight lines everyone.
Stay healthy,
Jay
