My buddy Junior and I fished Jamaica Bay again Thursday, after a successful outing a few days earlier. This time we launched from Canarsie, in order to better use the tides to our advantage. Though Junior caught some stripers jigging a bucktail, it was a shallow swimming plug (Crystal Minnow) that caught most of the fish again. We had 16 fish between us, fishing in the west end of the Patch.

What made the trip interesting were the conditions; we had to fight a 20+ knot wind all afternoon, and that meant that you had to be good in your kayak as well as good with your fishing. I LOVE those times. To me, that's the difference between "kayak fishing" and just sitting in a kayak while you fish.

It was Junior who wanted to stay for "just one more pass." But as the tide dropped, the wind picked up even more and conditions were deteriorating fast. A passing DEC boat slowed to be sure we were OK. We got out at just the right time.
