use a VPN - does block some of that stuff

Some good info here. iOS13 and Android 11 will allow you to block calls not on your contact list.

I recently had to replace my old Iphone5 and got an Apple 2020SE (same size so it fits in my yak hatch.) In settings / phone there is an option to silence all the unknown caller calls. (This is a Godsend for me as my hearing aids are Bluetooth and every phone ring lights up my ears like a slap to the noggin!) At the end of the day I look at the accumulation of "recent calls" and am continually surprised at how many were "silenced" and never rang. They are all spam and garbage calls and I simply block them one at a time. Not sure if real people would be silenced and unable to leave a voice mail so when, for instance, we replaced our patio and deck, and are having our stoops and doors replaced, I made sure that I put those numbers along with Windowrama and Floor Decor in my contacts list. As JPD said, IOS13 is probably why I can now do this. I have not been disturbed with a junk call since I got the phone and activated that option. Wish my home phone (Verizon, Home Phone Connect, which is actually a cellular with a retrans unit) would work like that !

My home phone ( landline ) spectrum allows visual of incoming calls, logs it too… we have the ringer off and allows a soft ring to come tru the Fax machine… most calls are spam that hang up, (robot calls too) some creeps try to say hello, hello thinking we will pick up… nope ? cellfish…

When I retired in 2011 I no longer needed fax capability (the gubmint still relied on that obsolete technology lol, instead of scanning and emailing .jpegs) and switched to this Verizon Home Phone Connect. $27. a month for unlimited calls nationwide. But I think we can only use the callerID to screen incoming calls. Sometimes for shits and grins I open the connection, quietly lay down the phone on the desk or counter, and walk away while hearing "hello", "can you hear me" etc.
