Night Tide

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take advantage of the incredible weather the past couple of days, but I did sneak out with a couple of friends to fish some structure on a windless night. Headed to the spot at slack tide with 2 dozen eels ready to go.

For the first hour of fishing we hardly had any water movement as the tide was still changing, We had a couple bites and dropped a few fish. Once the tide transitioned the bite turned on and for the first hour or so of the incoming tide we boated a dozen bass or so with 1 slot sized keeper. As the tide progressed, the current proved too quick, the bite died and we called it a night. Overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out and I'm looking forward to the next few weeks as the season winds down. Hope to give a blackfish report soon.

Sounds about right. Been getting plenty of short tog and bass, but the action has been good. Hopefully it continues for a few more weeks.

Remember 30 or so years ago when live lining small blackfish was the best daytime striper bait? But those bass were no fools, if you tried fishing a black after dark there was no action, but then we'd switch to eels...

a bergal or cunner is a good bait. It's also good for stripping too.
Ready available around the rocks with porgy hooks and a touch
of clam.

Interestingly, the keeper bass had a red hake? Some kind of ling in its stomach. Didn't look digested so it must've been right before it was caught. Always interesting to see what these fish are eating.
