The ones I had were "white sauce" based and tasted similar to linguini and clam sauce in flavor

It's definitely an acquired taste: either love it or hate it.
For this i just had a Toscani frozen margherita pizza from the store and added the clams, cilantro and a little sauce. .
It is more traditional "white" with no red sauce. Can even add some shrimp too.
Filetto's in East Northport makes a great brick oven seafood oreganato pizza if you are ever in the neighborhood.

Had one at Pepe's Pizza (of Doonesbury fame) in New Haven, CT many moons ago. I remember it was great!

I was in La Spezia, Italy a few years ago and they put mussels on a pizza. They left them in the shells however, so that was kind of funky to eat!

I was in Naples as well. Very thin crust if I recall.
