Has anyone here planned a trip to Nantucket Shoals to go fluke fishing? I've been wanting to do a trip there with my own boat, but this year, got a little side tracked.
If so, I'm interested in trying to plan around the optimum conditions, and was wondering what people that have fished there have found to be the best time to go.
Month, moon phase, tides, etc.
I've already calculated the trip there by boat from Montauk vs trailering around to Cape Cod and then launching and running from there. It makes more sense for me to make the 90-100-nm run by boat (~4-hour run) than trailer ~250-miles and then still run 25-40nm to fish. Obviously having the perfect weather window to make that run in a small boat are necessary for a couple/few days. So with that said, weather aside, for those that fish there, what do you find to be the "right" time to be there?
Following the fishing reports from the area, it looks like late June is prime time. Or maybe June, early July?
How does the moon affect the fishing? I know the currents can really rip there causing large standing waves. Are the stronger currents on a full/new moon preferred, or would the lighter currents off of the moons be better (easier fishing with lighter weights)?
There don't appear to be any current stations for out on the shoals themselves. They are just around Nantukcet, Nantucket Sound, MV and Cape Cod itself. Is there a better current to target to fish? Outgoing vs. Incoming?
Thank you in advance.
