Post your 2019-2024 Fluke Pix & Trip Reports Here!

Time to call Chris/HippyChik. Given the nasty knee issues I've had this past Fall/Winter, I never thought I'd get it all done before Memorial Day. All I can say is "LET THE GAMES BEGIN!"

First real fluke report of the season...Not that great but we had ocean fluke ..seven fish with two keepers ...

Left this AM ocean ways not happy.. bit of a 3 to 6 ft washing machine ..some 4 to 6' really close ..It did lay down by ten ish..and turned into a beautiful day..

hit some normal everyone knows spots & seabass everywhere ,,could not get away from them ..did pick some fat ling & than moved to my honey hole & they were there,,,Not in great numbers ,,But that AM swell could have shut down the bite ...

off again after the big blow ...

wish I had a good fluke report..Fluke are few & far between..water still 55 to 57 degrees ..also ling are few & that has me worried ..
BSB are around but many many shorts & it make fishing for anything else hard ...inshore water dirty & loaded with grass..deeper water clean ...

hope next weeks warm up brings the fish...squid drag boats working the 50 to 65 ' depth..

I did put a mixed bag together ling , mack's blues & a fluke .,.but nothing great..

Whelp, not such a good week, so far. In addition to having to put down our beautiful and beloved Collie Casey on Saturday, my launch day today had to be put off. You'd think an entire Spring's worth of knee-busting work would have disclosed any weird issues, but nope.

With my hauler an hour out, I typically run the engine on the house hose for a bit, so to warm her up and be ready to her back off the trailer without any carburetor fuss. So, connected the hose, opened the house hose's gate valve - and Voila! Water pouring out of my RW strainer basket, into the bilge. Look here:

I cannot say if this was a result of old age (34 yrs in the bilge), or if the dopey non-tox antifreeze I tried for the first time this past Winter didn't do its job - but whatever, no launch for the Lep.

Luckily I caught it before I had a major overheat on the way from the ramp to my slip - or that it didn't let go while the boat was unattended at the marina and thus no one around to close the sea cock. Lesson learned - close the engine sea cock at the dock and create a sign that reminds me to open it before starting up in the morning - maybe with a hook for the key to hang on. Or maybe just hang the key right on the sea cock's arm. I'll figure it out.

A dopey piece of blow-molded acrylic, a rubber o-ring and new plastic drain plug - approx $90 tomorrow at Freeport Marine. Just ridiculous.

And I miss the hell out of my baby, Casey. Couldn't ask for a sweeter, smarter, better behaved doggie.

So sorry to hear about Casey.
We put down our yellow lab at 16 yrs old, 3 years ago and I'm still not over it....

The $90 for parts are an inconvenience but good thing it happened on land

Pt.Pleasant NJ report: after a quick 15 man limit (150) of quality size biscuits we tried ocean Fluking - no good. Made a quick move to fluke inside on the MAnasquan River , best action of the year so far . We had 8 keepers up to 24" and countless shorts in 90 minutes or so. Thursday b4 the NE winds came on....

First Fluke Trip "Non-Report"

Headed out today on my rig with George Scocca and Capt. Mike/Capt's Table. Sailed right to my best "open bottom" drop - and found this sitting squarely on it:

So got as close as I could and began casting - first cast a decent 18" fish. Was feelin' it, but that was it for the day - no more fluke. We did shift here and there for a couple of hours, but it just didn't look like it would happen on the incoming. So we switched gears and went to the harder bottom for some ling jerkin'.

That turned out to be a tooth-pull as well, with us boxing maybe a dozen or so for our efforts - but not for lack of "other" fishies just killin' us. We must have slammed at least a bushel and a half of MAJOR-sized knuckleheads, all returned of course. Just couldn't get away from them, no matter where I shifted. Really beautiful-sized specimens - which of course will probably begin moving off as soon as the season opens on the 23rd. What a shame that our neighboring states, north and south have an open season right now - and we, here in NY are once again the red-headed stepchild! Just a sham that the same body of fish can be fished from a different geographic port and have no issues with LE.

Anyway, this one was fairly typical of the bruisers we caught today:

The ocean fluke will be here soon enough I guess. Meantime I certainly will be targeting these big beasties as soon as I legally can.

Once again Pete sorry to hear about Casey. It's a tough thing to go through. I had a blast fishing you guys, as usual. I still think we should have asked the Captain of the freighter to get off of our spot ;). I'd also like to mention that we need to update our sea bass regs. There's no doubt more fish were killed by the dozen boats or so than if the season was open. We had to catch and release 50 huge sea bass. Had we been able to keep our 3 fish limit we would have killed nine and left.

These regs need to be fixed ASAP.
