Sailed with George and his upstate buddy Steve on a pretty bumpy ocean to my favorite grounds - I had my doubts as to the overall fish-ability, but once we got there, though it was not real nice, we only needed 4oz to hold well. So we hit this drift line and that on the outgoing, and a fish here and one there, no real consistency. Tons of shorts boated, with three for the box.
We waited out the turn and finally found a drift with quality fish. And so when all was said and done, the final count was ten units for the three of us to 5.5lbs, plus four very nice biscuits.
And who had 7 of the 10 keeps, including the largest? That's right - THIS guy!
Today I was NOT the fire hydrant - though in truth I ain't much of a dog anymore either - eh, maybe a cocker spaniel at best.

So for the second trip in a row, the "Brian Modified" B/S Rig ruled. They were all over that longer dropper/leader to a White Glow 6" woim. Really seems to attract extra attention from the better fish on those rougher days.

wanted to get out before the blow...hit the inshore grounds for a disappointing catch of five fluke ..so I went deep & its was short city..we did manage to pick a dozen chicken Mahi up ..lots of fun
with the day getting on I hit another spot before heading in & in three or four short drifts we landed five more fluke with two over 4 lbs and one over 5 lbs
hope the blow dont blow away the fish or I'll have to start running out to the 25 & 30 mile wrecks

did a 3/4 day today ..had to get back a bit early & had air in my fuel line making the ride home a bit slow....
anyway hit four different spots inshore & in the deep ..water still dirty all churned up..last drop was the best..ended up with ten keepers to just a oz shy of six pounds ..

Hit the ocean grounds south of JI this morning with George and Capt. Mike for a truly excellent day of fishing. It was a "one-stop shopping" kind of trip!
We put five fish in the box on the first drift, including my 5.75lb trip best on my very first cast of the day. Slow but steady drifting made the day perfect for the spinning gear and we all put our light setups thru some serious gymnastics this trip, with a full boat limit to my first fish's nice husky size. We had to have boated at least 75 other lesser fish, with many in the 18.5" range - heart breakers for sure.
Only needed 2oz ball-heads for most of the trip, and I found that the 5" GULP! Jigging Grubs in "Curried Chicken" and "Nuclear Chicken" worked very well for me throughout the day. . .
Love it when this happens on my very first cast:

Capt. Mike took a well-deserved busman's holiday from his busy charter schedule to sail this trip with us. Thanks for coming “far to the West” today Mike!:

Easily the best Fluke bite I have seen the entire season; not a single lull the whole day.

Very nice guys ! Glad to see the the storm did not blow them out Hopefully you left a few out there for when I return from Maine bear camp
Fished outside JI this morning with George and Capt. Mike as my crew d'jour- for a really outstanding day of fluking. First drift had us boxing four fat fish, and the hits kept coming. Mike had the best fish of the day at 6.5lbs, plus some other nice ones, George and I had multiple 5lb+ fish as well. Full boat limit by 11:00 in the morning. We stayed 'til 12:45, playing C&R with a bunch of near-keeper and a few "real ones" as well. A very aggressive bite today, clean water, clear skies, very light to nearly no breeze, and they bit HARD on the LW turn. I'd call it the perfect fluke later-season day.
The only negative was the surprising explosion of Mike's Capt. Neil-built spinning rod. Actually broke into three pieces on the hook set. Mike was pretty upset as CN crafted that rod for him as a retirement gift. Unfortunately Capt. Neil is no longer building rods, so we'll have to see if we can find him a nice Shimano Grappler Type J to take away some of his pain.
I had to hand-line in this fat keeper, while he reeled his line back onto his Vanford. So in truth, did he catch it or did I? ?
Back to the dock nice and early - no long faces here!:

Well finally made it out on our private charter, myself and 4 other guys. Ended up with about 2-3 keepers each of Fluke and a total of 5 sea bass. First time ever using Dogfish as bait and it held up nicely. I ended up sticking with my Grappler setup the whole day, 6 oz ball and a single hook above with a squid skirt did the trick.
Thanks for one of the best fluke fishing I've had.

Back to back limit trips with the quality actually improving today. Another masterful effort, Capt. Pete.
Although I have broken a rod tip or two in the past, I have never had a rod literally explode in my hands like my CN Spinner did today. No hard feelings toward my favorite custom rod builder as I know the materials used in this particular blank are a bit fragile. What I cannot replace is the sentimental value as it was gifted to me 5 years ago as a retirement present. However I will mount the butt over my work table in the garage as a tribute to my good friend Capt. Neil's effort and generosity. Have no fear, Neil, I caught many nice fish on this rod during it's shorter than expected lifetime!

went to Nantucket shoals Monday on a 6pk. No big guys...but an easy boat limit by 10 A.M. Hung around the Cape for a couple of days with my brother.

Have you done the trip before? I never have but hearing from friends who have, DD fish are scarcer this year…..wonder if it’s just a cyclical thing or if it’s pressure on the fishery….
