Robert Conrad, Pappy Boyington & Jim West, has passed...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert Conrad, the rugged, contentious actor who starred in the hugely popular 1960s television series “Hawaiian Eye” and “The Wild, Wild West,” died Saturday. He was 84.

The actor died of heart failure in Malibu, California, family spokesperson Jeff Ballard said. A small private service is planned for March 1, which would have been his 85th birthday.

“He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts,” Ballard said.

I watched the whole series 25 yrs ago when I was home with broken leg

As a kid, the "Gull Winged, Whistling Death F4-U Corsair was my favorite WWII fighter plane, so of course I was mesmerized with the life of Pappy Boyington. When Black Sheep Squadron with Robert Conrad came out, it was my instant favorite because I got to see my favorite plane and one of my favorite actors, Robert Conrad who I got to love watching the Wild, Wild West.
 
Yeah, his bundle was always exposed, tight pants... that Corsair was a threatening looking thing, had its power problems and became a land base only plane... black sheep show was highly exaggerated wit drama... cellie...

Land based because of the huge prop, which forced the gull-shaped wing design so prop wouldn't hit the ground, and the extreme "up look" to protect the prop meant poor visibility putting that puppy on a carrier deck. It was better than than the Bearcat, but inferior to the Hellcat as a fighter, but was a tough customer and great for close air support for land missions. That's why the Marine's loved it. It was actually used for ground support in Korea and was a choice platform for taking out trains there...
