The water's getting cold, and the fish know it. If you're still out there, you're either hardcore or you're not paying for your own fuel. The fall run is winding down, but don't winterize the boat just yet. There are still some quality fish to be had if you know where to look and you're willing to put in the time.

Striped Bass

The migratory bass are on their way out, but there are still some stragglers around, and some of them are impressive 40-inch class fish. The resident fish are starting to settle into their winter haunts. Look for diving birds and work the mouths of the rivers and creeks. Soft plastics on jig heads are the ticket, whether you're casting from a boat or from the shore. The bite isn't what it was a few weeks ago, but it's still worth the effort, especially with the bigger fish making a showing.

Blackfish (Tautog)

The blackfish bite is the main event right now. The fish are moving into deeper water, so you'll want to focus your efforts on structure in the 35 to 45-foot range. It's been a classic case of short fish giving way to keepers once you get a bite going. Green crabs are the bait of choice, as always. The numbers of fish are increasing, and this bite should hold up until the season closes.

Sea Bass

There are still some quality sea bass mixed in with the blackfish. They're a welcome bycatch and a nice addition to the cooler. Don't be surprised if you hook into a few while you're targeting tog.

The Bottom Line

It's late in the season, but the fishing is far from over. Dress warm, be patient, and you can still put together a nice catch. The blackfish are the most reliable bet, but don't give up on the stripers just yet. Get out there and make it happen.
