Kind of a Big Deal - In My Mind Anyway

Almost forgot to post this info. Fluke season is coming, maybe even an April opening this year (though at a fairly tough 4 @ 19.5"). And so, I did see two rods that really caught my attention, during a recent visit to Causeway B&T.

The first was a Shimano Talavera Type J spinner, 6' long, rated to 200 grams, # TTJS60M.

This one would match up perfectly with the "best buy" Shimano Spheros 3000SW that I'm always talking up. At $119, this stick is a really nice pick up. For right around $250 you would have a rod/reel setup that would do great no matter where you fish. I think it had the perfect action and power to jig up to 5oz out in the deeper drops. And though many guys fish much lighter in the Bay, this rod would do fine there as well. A really nice stick for short coin. Oh, and shallow-water tog jigging? Yes, please.

The second rod that really impressed me was a Jigging World Ghost Hunter 200 gram, with spiral-wrapped guides. No pix of it, as I was busy b/s-ing with Chris regarding the 3@19" vs [email protected]" (longer season) 2024 proposed regs.

Anyway, this stick is one step heavier than my own Jigging World Ghost Hunter 150 gram, which I consider my second favorite medium ocean jigger, after my Palmarius #3, of course. Nothing I've ever fished touches the Palmarius for up-to-4oz jigging, but this Ghost Hunter would be close - and at the 200 grams load rating, it will jig a 6oz rig, which my GH 150 gram will not.

This one at $249 is more money than the foregoing Talavera, but you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to fishing rods. Barring a "Fishing Show Special" on a Palmarius, this Jigging World Ghost Hunter 200 gram is about as good as it gets in a factory-built ocean fluke jigger at that price level. Model #JW-GHS-C200. Just to put an exclamation point on Lep's endorsement of the Talavera, here is a photo of my most loyal charter customer from last November holding a nice 7# Tog taken on this rod.

Sal really put on a "Tog jigging clinic" that day boating 4 other Tog in the 4-6# class as well. The rod performed flawlessly, as did the angler!

Was just down there last month! Great guys behind the counter - very knowledgeable and helpful.

Picked myself up a 9 foot Jigging world Onyx - my new regular surf rod
