Should NY have a Minimum Property Tax that homeowners have to pay ?

I just think there should be a minimum property tax everybody in NY has to pay so it evens things out a bit. Newsday had an article years ago about the crazy state aid distribution in this state that heavily subsidizes counties upstate. Both Nassau and Suffolk Counties should have an income tax and a property tax to fund schools and local Government like NYC and Yonkers have.

Nassau is the highest taxed county in the nation, and that's not enough for you?

BTW, I don't support the level of taxation, but people here must love taking it in the tush because they could actually vote against a school budget once in a while.

No! As I stated earlier it’s all about choice. If you CHOOSE to live in a high tax area that’s the way it goes. No need to “ even things out” by adding more taxes on the productive members of society.

Exactly.

And...........................stop voting for the same garbage of a blue governed area. Pretty simple.

Sadly, as much as people cry about the property taxes here on LI they must be okay with it because they keep electing the same wannabes for school boards and it's almost unheard of for a school budget to be voted down.

Since that's the biggest portion of our taxes here, and something people have a direct way to express their opinions at the ballot box, it's just a fact. I think it's a sexual thing. People like to get f-d.

Regarding 2/3 of property tax going to schools: I read a proposed school budget line by line one year. While I cannot comment on most of the items, things like a $100K renovation to the superintendent's office stood out. That same year, the enrichment program was cut. It was either that or the middle school's baseball "B" team had to go. I think the public schools generally do a good job with the budget, but there are times when spending seems excessive.

District consolidation seems to be one of the only ways to possibly reduce the tax burden. The few attempts at this that I've seen have all been voted down overwhelmingly. Looks like the high taxes are here to stay.

It is the promise of “free”. And look, somebody else will pay. More of those than folks who contribute. That’s why it’s hard to breach the chain.

The waste is immense. There are districts with seating for 12,000 and only 5,000 students. It's like government. Keep taking. "It's for the children".

Why can't they have online learning starting in 10th grade for certain courses?
Senior Citizens should be exempt from property taxes and they should pay an income tax instead. A minimum property tax or an income tax wouldn't raise Long Island property taxes, they'd make others around the state pay more. My property is in Chenango County, I see wonderful homes in Norwich, NY for $90,000- $125,000 - property taxes are $1500- $3000 , No way those taxes are paying for the Schools/Gov't up there, without state aid their property taxes would be double /triple that. All over Upstate NY it's like that. More than half the people in NYC pay very little property tax . Some homes on Long Island have 5 or 6 earners living in a home and down the street there's an old lady living on a fixed income paying the same property tax .

I'm sure the budget in Norwich is not the same same as Manhasset.

Apples and oranges.
State Aid pays 2/3's of the taxes up there. Newsday had a feature article about the unequal state aid distribution that heavily favors Upstate NY. When you call the Police Upstate, more often than not you'll see a State Trooper or Conservation Officer Respond.

And how long does it take them to respond?

For cmparison, most of my nephews teachers at Manhasset HS had PhDs. Class size was small
My other nephew in Liberty had teachers who were mostly uncertified substitutes. Class size was big.

And on and on.
