So I have this dilemma . . .

I really enjoy, fluking and smallmouth fishing. This time of year it's 50/50. I finally got the boat in the water today, so I'm itching to get some blood on the deck. My first instinct is to be out there for opening day. My log books show that traditionally under the right conditions, my keeper ratio is much higher through the month of May.

But then there's the red-hot smallmouth bite that I know for a fact is happening right now. Cross River, which is in upper Westchester is red-hot with smallies up to 5-pounds.

I leaning heavily on the fluke opener. I've been waiting too long just to run the boat!

That's my dilemma. This week every year it's great for smallies, but the first week of May and June I find the bigger fluke. I had an 8 1/2 in 2010 on May 5th.

Do fluke stare at you with that i wanna kisk your ass look in their eyes.Like fluker stated once the water warms up those big smallies put on the dissappearing act plus this nice cool weather is good ROWING weather.

Do both. Get out on the reservoir tomorrow. Looking like the only fishable day this weekend then hit the fluke next week.

Hey George how do smallmouth bass fight compare to largemouth bass... which tase better bass or fluke..? Cellie...

I'll chime in here...

NO CONTEST on fight. Smallmouth's out fight a largemouth by a huge margin. Largemouth Bass - the most overrated fish that swims!!

Taste wise also no contest, fluke win hands down. Bass can taste muddy if they come out of a muddy lake. Now that being said, the best tasting fresh water fish IMO are walleye. It's the only fresh water fish that I might order in a restaurant that has both fresh and salt water fish on the menu.
