Well-Known Angler
Fished out of Mattituck Inlet yesterday for the last of the ebb tide. Ran to the sea bass grounds & soon found out that with the W/S/W wind & ebb tide 12oz on sinker wasn't going to be enough to find & hold the bottom. Small porgies & sea robins were the order of the morning. With little more than an hour left in the tide, decided to run to one of my old favorite Stripe Bass spots that really hasn't shown very much life in the past few seasons, just to keep it honest. Second drift, with a bucktail on a 3 way, put the rod in a rod holder to take a drink of water, as this isn't a very sticky bottom. Turned back around & had a fish on, & put a fat 31" striper on ice. Don't know is accidental bass count, but they taste just as good.

Nic work, John. Striper on the rod and in the box always counts! As Mitch said, so many of us have caught some darn nice fish on the dead stick.

I also had a similar experience, tide wise, on yesterday's charter. I always fish the 60–90-minute window around slack water for Sea Bass and usually that period can extend up to almost 2 hours on a 1/4 phase moon. When we hit my favorite Sea Bass drop on the end of the flood, what I anticipated would be a pretty gentle flow was really cranking hard almost until the dead slack time. Very odd, but as the tide lost its steam the biscuits began to bite. I am curious to see what I find tomorrow when I head up there with the family for a rare recreational trip!
