Surprise catch!

To me the decline is due to a number of factors. Did we overfish the population years ago? Yes we did, like many people-the party boat fleet included, we never thought we could fish them out. The seal population isn't helping, the cormorants take some too.

What is move concerning to me is no one has really targeted winter flounder in years and the population still isn't increasing.

Maybe the marine biologists need to do some research and figure out why

I remember catching them off the docks as a kid in Center Moriches on Union Ave. This was also before my time, but I was told when you could walk across the bay with all the little rental skiffs out there, Silly Lilly and there was another big one (Citerellis)?
There were many... Silly Lilly, Cerullo Brothers, Tadsens, Skidmores...
They would tow multiple skiffs out at a time, like a train, and leave them anchored up in one spot all day with no motors LOL
I for one think that had at least as much effect on stocks as cormorants8-)

Cerullo thats it!

Here in NJ they've nearly disappeared, we now only see them as by-catch in Mud Hole

I don't know the specifics but I wonder how that amount compares to a cormorant in a day??
I grew up in Moriches and had many days like that too.
I don't doubt that cormorants have some sort of effect but I find it hard to believe they are the MAIN reason.

I'm glad your boy got to catch that fish!! My boy has yet to ever catch one......
Your right, and im not saying its the MAIN reason, but definitely has played a part. Even when they started to regulate the fishery, we caught fish every time out, 6-10 fish a trip. Now its basically nonexistent
