The COVID-19 Science and Medicine Question Thread

All the more reason that no one will be on my boat (if I launch) this summer except wifey, no one else will be in my pool, and no one will eat my marinated venison steaks off the barbie. I am A+

As am I. Admiral is "O" which is good to know...

The percentage of people testing positive in Suffolk county is now under 1 percent,it was over 30 percent just a few weeks ago.

For those of you who think we're getting close to attaining Herd Immunity, this graphic appeared in the NYTimes at the end of May, and no, the last few weeks haven't moved the estimates much.

The graphic estimates Herd Immunity to be attained at a minimum level of 60%. Some scientists, including myself, figure you need to be about 75% for a safer confirmation of Herd Immunity. Regardless, NOBODY NOWHERE is even close...

The F.D.A. withdrew emergency approval for malaria drugs promoted by Trump.
The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that it was revoking emergency authorization of two malaria drugs to treat Covid-19, saying that they are “unlikely to be effective.”

The drugs, hydroxychloroquine and a related drug, chloroquine, were heavily promoted by President Trump after a handful of small, poorly controlled studies showed that they could work in treating the disease.

Mr. Trump even took hydroxychloroquine after he was exposed to two people who had tested positive for the coronavirus. The agency said that after reviewing some data, it had determined that the drugs, particularly hydroxychloroquine, did not demonstrate benefits that outweighed their risks. Earlier this year, the F.D.A. issued a warning that the drugs could cause alarming heart arrhythmias.

In March, the F.D.A. authorized stockpiles of the drugs to be used in hospitals to treat patients with the virus. But in a letter Monday revoking the authorization, the agency said that further studies have shown that the two drugs were unlikely to be effective in stopping the virus, and that current national treatment guidelines don’t recommend using them outside of clinical trials.

According to the letter, written by Denise M. Hinton, the F.D.A.’s chief scientist, the request to revoke the authorization came from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a unit of the Department of Health and Human Services that is in charge of supplying treatments in public health emergencies.

Members of Congress have questioned increases in the F.D.A.’s granting of emergency use authorizations during the pandemic for certain drugs as potential treatments. They have also questioned authorizations for antibody and diagnostic tests whose data had not been thoroughly vetted before approval, and for certain types of masks and other devices. Some Democratic lawmakers have criticized the Trump administration for pressuring the agency into issuing too many emergency approvals.

Where is your data for this opinion?

My data??? If you read that entire thread regarding qualitative immunoassays for antibody detection, you'll see step by step instructions for developing one and the reasons you get a Negative or Positive result with no numeric value.

BTW, the person who insisted he would report back a numeric value because his doctor said he would, never came back with a numeric result...

I've developed just a few assays and got them licensed by the FDA to test blood donations for things like...

Hepatitis A antibodies
Hepatitis B antibodies
Hepatitis B antigen
Hepatitis C antibodies
Hepatitis C antigen
HTLV-I antibodies
HTLV-II antibodies
HIV antibodies
HIV antigen

Do you have any data to the contrary or any immunoassay development experience you'd like to share?

If anyone is still wondering about an upsurge as things open up. Masks and social distancing are the best weapons we have and now as the economy is firing up, they're the only tools we have.

More than 35,000 new coronavirus cases were identified across the United States on Tuesday, according to a New York Times database, the highest single-day total since late April and the third-highest total of any day of the pandemic.

As the United States continues to reopen its economy, case numbers are rising in more than 20 states, mostly in the South and West. Florida on Wednesday reported a new daily high of 5,508 cases. Texas reported more than 5,000 cases on Tuesday, its largest single-day total yet. Arizona added more than 3,600 cases, also a record.

In Washington State, where case numbers are again trending upward, the governor said residents would have to start wearing masks in public. “This is about saving lives,” said Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat. “It’s about reopening our businesses. And it’s about showing respect and care for one another.”

In Florida on Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis gave no indication that the state would roll back its economic opening, but he urged residents to avoid closed spaces with poor ventilation, crowds and close contact with others.

Mr. DeSantis, a Republican, continued to attribute the rising infections to younger people, especially in cities, who have started to socialize in bars and homes, in spite of rules in many municipalities prohibiting group gatherings.
He pressed older people to keep staying home as much as possible, and pleaded with young people to be responsible.

“You need to do your part and make sure that you’re not spreading it to people who are going to be more at risk for this,” he said.

The elevated case numbers are a result of worsening conditions across much of the country as well as increased testing, but testing alone does not explain the surge. The percentage of people in Florida testing positive has risen sharply. Increases in hospitalizations also signal the virus’s spread.

Arizona reported on Monday its highest number of virus hospitalizations, as did North Carolina on Tuesday, prompting its governor, Roy Cooper, to announce on Wednesday that the state would pause reopening for three weeks and require face masks. In Texas, more than 4,000 people with the virus are hospitalized, more than double the number at the beginning of June.

“I strongly feel we are moving in the wrong direction and we are moving fast,” Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston said.

But in Missouri, where new case reports have reached their highest levels in recent days, coronavirus hospitalizations have declined slightly over the last month.

“We are NOT overwhelmed,” Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, said on Twitter, linking the uptick to more testing. “We are NOT currently experiencing a second wave. We have NO intentions of closing Missouri back down at this point in time.”
