the "Headline That Caught My Attention or the WTF" thread

Obviously the Website Editor for the NY Times is NOT a King Crimson Fan...

The article is about Robert Fripp, of course, and is quite interesting. It talks about a King Crimson documentary which I'm going to want to see. Right now, I'm thinking of grabbing some of the weed friends left here, putting on the headphones, and listening to Islands or In the Court of the Crimson King or Lizard or something else from my college "daze".

Wait, maybe I want to really go to Dairy Queen, but dang it, it's a 40 miles round trip...

Too funny, didn't know that you could be too drunk to pass a polygraph test...

Montauk angler Edward Pollner sues claiming he was too drunk to pass polygraph that cost him prize money

He lost his golden oppor-tuna-ty.

A professional angler is out nearly $200,000 in prize money from a Rhode Island fishing tournament because officials don’t believe his nearly 200-pound catch was above board, according to a lawsuit.

Edward Pollner, 58, and his captain, Rudolf Bonicelli, failed a lie-detector test administered by tourney officials.

The fishermen’s defense? They were too drunk to pass it.

Pollner says the test was unfair — and invalid — because he and his buddy were drinking like fish in celebration of the giant bigeye tuna they caught.

He is now suing competition host Tri-State Tournaments, claiming it was wrong to administer the polygraph so soon after they returned to dock. Rules allow seven days for a test to be administered. Such tests are given after fishing tournaments to ensure winners have followed all the rules.

“Both Mr. Pollner and Mr. Bonicelli had consumed alcohol provided by Tri-State at the post-tournament ceremony, and Mr. Bonicelli informed the polygraph examiner that he had not slept the night before,” Pollner said in court papers. “Despite the fact that their alcohol consumption and Mr. Bonicelli’s fatigue made them unsuitable examinees under widely accepted polygraph standards, Tri-State proceeded with the polygraphs.”

Bloody crew of sunken boat seen using bare hands to battle sharks off Louisiana coast

The U.S. Coast Guard witnessed a scene straight out of ”Jaws” on Sunday, Oct. 9, when it found the crew of a sunken fishing boat fighting off sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.

All three men were plucked alive from the water and rushed to a hospital, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
Two of the three suffered shark bites to their hands, with one showing signs of hypothermia, officials said.
Identities of the men were not released.

The rescue happened 25 miles off Empire, Louisiana, as the Coast Guard was searching for a fishing boat reported missing late Saturday, Oct. 8. Empire is about 55 miles southeast of New Orleans.

It was later discovered the 24-foot center console boat had sunk around 10 a.m. Saturday, leaving the crewmen in the water for more than a day, officials said.

A Coast Guard helicopter spotted the men Sunday, and a rescue boat “arrived on scene and witnessed two of the boaters fending off sharks, along with injuries to both boater’s hands.”

“The two boaters were pulled from the water by the boat crew before additional injuries could occur,” officials said.

The third boater was “hoisted” from the water by helicopter, officials said.

A Jayhawk helicopter took the three to University Medical Center New Orleans, “where the boaters were reported in stable condition,” officials said.

“We searched an area roughly the size of Rhode Island and are thankful to have found these missing boaters,” Lt. Commander Kevin Keefe said in the release.

“If the family member had not notified the Coast Guard, and if these three boaters were not wearing life jackets, this could’ve been a completely different outcome. We appreciate the assistance of the boating public, who were instrumental in helping identify possible areas where these boaters could have been operating before the vessel became in distress.”

Investigators have not said what caused the fishing boat to sink, but the mishap left the men without any means of communicating their location, officials said.

Wonder if our resident NYC Zoologist, @CELLFISH, can verify these data?

Coyotes Came to New York City, but Not for Our Pizza

The canine species seems to prefer the tastes of its homes in the wild over the movable feasts left behind by humans.

Pizza rats. Trash pandas. Rats with wings. Animals in New York City seem like they thrive off New Yorkers’ refuse. Now that the city has a small coyote population, has it gained litter puppies? Fuggedaboutit.

You have probably never seen one, but “considering the number of potential habitats available to them, we estimate between 20 and 30 coyotes are here in the city,” said Carol Henger, an urban ecologist at Fordham University who studies the animals. The idea of a wild animal — not a dog, not a wolf, just big enough to be a little unsettling — haunting places like the Bronx makes the wilderness feel a little closer. But it also raises a question: What does a city coyote even eat?

Despite its urban surroundings, Dr. Henger and her colleagues discovered, a city coyote maintains a surprisingly wild diet. Urban and suburban coyotes, the researchers reported last month in the journal PeerJ, eat similar amounts of human food, which does not make up most of their sustenance. Instead, city coyotes eat what they have always eaten — small mammals, plants, bugs and whatever else they can get their paws on. Coyotes may be living in the city, but they are living alongside us, not off our stuff.

Like mother, like daughter.

On Oct. 10, Heidi Klum shared a fun behind-the-scenes video to Instagram from a new Intimissimi lingerie campaign shoot, which also starred her daughter Leni Klum. In the black-and-white Reel, the supermodel, 49, and the rising fashion star, 18, are seen laughing and dancing in lacy bras and panties between photo takes.

In one standout moment, the two share a quick kiss on the lips before giggling and hugging each other. "Creative director ….my longtime friend @thomashayo," Heidi captioned the post. "Thanks for making us feel confident all day singing and dancing in our @intimissimiofficial."

Talk about slumming it!!!

Netflix is inching closer to building a huge production studio on the Jersey Shore.

The tech giant has been selected as the top bidder for a piece of land occupied by a former Army base about 50 miles south of New York City, two people with knowledge of the decision said. Netflix still has several hoops to jump through — economic terms are not yet final, and more approvals are needed — but this gets it closer than ever to having a major production complex in the Northeast.

The company was bidding against several developers for nearly 300 acres of the site of Fort Monmouth, in the boroughs of Oceanport and Eatontown.

“If our plans are approved, we hope to build a facility that will create significant economic impact and job growth for New Jersey, a state loaded with creative talent and technical expertise,” the company said in a statement.

Netflix has also had a major proponent: Gov. Phil Murphy, who has been intent on bringing Hollywood productions back to New Jersey in a significant way.

“We are thrilled to hear that Netflix is interested in establishing a serious presence in New Jersey and look forward to working with them and the rest of the industry to create good-paying jobs and spur economic growth throughout the state,” Mr. Murphy said in a statement.

Netflix did not disclose the price of its bid. But apparently the company’s recent struggles — Netflix has lost subscribers this year, and its share price has taken a nosedive — did not affect its interest in the area, which it has been targeting since last year. The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority appraised the parcel at $54 million, but several developers previously offered more than $100 million for just 89 acres of the 1,126-acre Army base.

WTF is wrong with the world......................?

A fifth grade teacher has been arrested after telling one of her students that she had made a "kill list" with students she taught and her colleagues.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, officers from the East Chicago Police Department were dispatched to speak with the principal and assistant principal of St. Stanislaus School — located about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago — in reference to a threatening report that school officials had learned about earlier in the day regarding fifth grade teacher Angelica Carrasquillo-Torres, a 25-year-old educator from Griffith, Indiana.

"At approximately 12:45 p.m. a 5th grade student told his/her Counselor that their 5th grade teacher made comments to him/her about killing herself, students, and staff at St. Stanislaus School," East Chicago Police Department said in a statement released on social media. "The teacher further told the student that she has a list and that he/she was on the bottom of that list."

Bakery Creates ‘Pan Solo,’ a 6-Foot Replica of ‘Star Wars’ Hero Made of Bread

A California bakery made Han Solo frozen in carbonite out of bread. Passers-by “kind of don’t believe you that it’s made out of dough,” a baker said.

1665916288929.webp

They made him at night, in the quiet hours after the bakery had closed. Together they worked, mother and daughter, mixing the materials that would give form to their creation — flour, water and sugar.

Slowly, he began to emerge as each feature was sculpted and placed into the oven to bake. First came the basic contours of his body, then the details: the anguished expression, lips contorted in pain, hands reaching out in desperation.

Finally, after a month of work, he was ready: a lovingly wrought 6-foot recreation of Han Solo frozen in carbonite, made entirely of bread. The duo behind the creation, Hannalee Pervan and her mother, Catherine Pervan, called him “Pan Solo.”

On Sunday, the sculpture went on display outside their shop, One House Bakery in Benicia, Calif., about 40 miles north of San Francisco, next to an arrangement of seasonal gourds and a chalkboard that read, “Our hero Pan Solo has been trapped in Levainite by the evil Java the Hut.”

Customers and passers-by have noticed.

“People are just super interested by it, and you see people smelling it and poking it and they’re just like, ‘What is going on?’” said Hanalee Pervan, the shop’s co-owner and head baker. “They kind of don’t believe you that it’s made out of dough.”

But it is. The younger Ms. Pervan and her mother, co-owner of the bakery, made Pan Solo out of dead dough, which contains no yeast. Ms. Pervan learned to make the dough several years ago at Wheat Stalk, a baking conference, and started using it to bake Halloween decorations.

Then she and her mother, both self-described science fiction nerds, set their sights higher.

In 2018, the year they opened the family bakery, they made Game of Scones, featuring a White Walker made of bread, next to an iron throne of baguettes.

Encouraged by the positive response from the public, in 2020 they made the “Pain-dough-lorian,” clad in armor made of bread, “Baby Dough-Da” clothed in bread and “floating” in mixing bowls, and “the Pandroid,” made of pans and kitchen tools, all inspired by the television series “The Mandalorian.”

Last year, they created “Dough-ki,” a menacing alligator made of bread, with sharp teeth and curved horns, modeled after “Alligator Loki,” a creature on the Marvel television series “Loki,” starring Tom Hiddleston.

This year, they thought about baking Audrey II, the bloodthirsty plant from “Little Shop of Horrors,” but worried it wouldn’t fit in the oven. So they settled on Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, frozen in the mythic substance carbonite from the 1980 “Star Wars” movie “The Empire Strikes Back.”

Hannalee Pervan served as a model for the body, which was placed on a plywood board and then layered with dough. Getting the final details right was not easy.

“Mom made me leave it because I was obsessing over the lips,” said Hanalee Pervan, who has worked at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, Calif., and was part of the team that made bread for Mr. Keller’s famed restaurant The French Laundry, also in Yountville. “She was like, ‘You need to walk away.’”

All of their bread sculptures were made for Benicia’s Downtown Scarecrow Contest, which encourages local businesses to display creative scarecrows for Halloween.

Ms. Pervan said making Pan Solo was particularly meaningful for her because she lost much of her senses of smell and taste after contracting the coronavirus in January 2021. She had always found pleasure in the smells and tastes of the kitchen and had dreamed of being a baker since she was 10.

“So just to find joy in a different part of food is really important,” she said.

Catherine Pervan said it was well worth the long hours it took her and her daughter to craft Pan Solo.

“It’s a little quiet time for us to have together when she’s not the boss and I’m not the mom,” she said. “It’s just us, hanging out and working together.”

A massive fire broke out at a pumpkin patch in Texas, filling the air with explosions and thick black smoke as flames engulfed over 70 vehicles, officials told news outlets.

Videos shared to social media show families running to safety on Saturday, Oct. 15, many with young children and infants, even as others make their way toward the smoldering parking lot — perhaps in an effort to save their car, truck or SUV.

Firefighters from many departments in the area responded and managed to extinguish the blaze, but not before at least 73 vehicles were destroyed, KCEN reported.

Nobody was injured, the farm said.
