Very sad for the youth of Long Island. One child done with college, the other has two more years. I told them pay attention, stay with us, and save every dollar. And start thinking about another state. Have you seen what $500-$600 can buy? Mostly reno's. Add in the ridiculous taxes for which there is no return and it is unaffordable.

Take it from me who is going through the Medicaid application process we for my elderly dad, if you have some money, give it to your kids when they need it! Don't make them wait till your dead because the the govt might have a say!!!

Hardest part for the elder folks is the process of letting go of their hard earned wealth while they are alive. Proper planning, and in this case, passing money to family is so important. I could tell you many stories regarding this topic.

Go to an elder law lawyer and have him set up an irrevocable trust. Then put the house and most of the cash into the trust. After 5 years, it's all fully protected from government greed should a nursing home be needed.

Yes but unfortunately a man is not protected if within those 5 years his pension deposits accumulate and every cash withdrawal over 2K is a red flag.
