House panel passes 9/11 victims fund bill a day after Jon Stewart's emotional testimony

The House Judiciary Committee unanimously passed a bill which would permanently reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Wednesday, the day after comedian Jon Stewart gave impassioned testimony in support of the bill in video that quickly went viral.

The bill will now go to the floor for a full vote in the House of Representatives, where it is likely to pass. It's unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will take up the bill in the Senate, although Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Wednesday that he was "imploring, pleading, even begging" McConnell to bring the bill to the floor as soon as it passes in the House.

Stewart, the former host of "The Daily Show," gave emotional testimony before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties on Tuesday, at times broke down in tears and shouted at the lawmakers, calling them "shameful."

Jon - thank you for your efforts on behalf of the 9/11 Responders.

North Carolina boy whacks alleged robber with machete; injured suspect arrested after manhunt

7055

An 11-year-old boy, who was home alone when three people broke into his family's North Carolina residence, turned the tables on the alleged criminals when he grabbed a machete and whacked one of them in the head, officials said.
Braydon Smith said he knew he didn't have time to think or be afraid.

"I grabbed my machete off my wall and went to hit him," he said in an exclusive interview with ABC station WTVD in Durham, North Carolina. "I knew I had to act in the heat of the moment."

n his home in Mebane, North Carolina, about 20 miles northwest of Chapel Hill.
Johnson, who lives in another state, was on the phone with her son when someone knocked on the front door of the Mebane house. Johnson told WTVD that she heard one of the intruders say the house was empty.

Sheriff's officials said that when the alleged robbers entered the house they discovered Braydon alone. Hall allegedly picked up a pellet gun he found in the house, took Braydon's phone and forced the boy into a bedroom closet before he and his accomplices allegedly proceeded to ransack the residence, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office.

"The juvenile, who is a star baseball player on several area teams, left the closet and was able to gain access to a machete. He entered the living room behind the intruder, swung the machete, and struck the man in the back of the head," the statement reads.

Hall responded by kicking the boy in the stomach and knocking him against a couch, authorities said. But Braydon quickly scrambled to his feet and charged after Hall again, swinging the machete but missing.

"The intruder then kicked the child in the side of the head and turned to grab several items, including a television and a PlayStation. At this point, the intruder realized he was bleeding significantly from the machete strike. He dropped the electronics, exited the residence and all three suspects fled the home," according to the sheriff's office.

“Not only did this youngster thwart the larceny attempt, he created blood evidence that very well may lead to a conviction in this case,” Sheriff Charles Blackwood told reporters on Friday before Hall escaped. "This is a very tough kid who kept his wits about him. At the same time, I want to reflect that this youngster, his family, and indeed this community, are very lucky this event did not have a tragic ending for the child.”

Police: Arizona man beheads roommate's dog as she moves out

BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona man has been arrested on suspicion of mutilating and beheading his roommate's dog as she moved out of the home that the two shared in a Phoenix suburb.

Jose Vega Meza, 21, told investigators that he killed the dog on Saturday because his roommate owed rent money to his mother, who owns the home in the city of Buckeye, police said.

The man's roommate told police she lost track of her dog as she moved out her belongings and saw Vega Meza trying to sneak a box onto her truck.

The roommate opened the box to discover the headless dog inside.

More a WTF picture, the photo below for a popular Southern Maine/Northern Massachusetts/Very Southern Canada beach here, Old Orchard Beach, taken last July 4th. Not shown in the photo is the beach's boardwalk complete with amusement rides, adding that extra Je ne sais quoi to the beach's ambiance...

WTH would want to go to the beach with thousands of their closest friends??? Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure some of you here that frequent Jones Beach, and other "popular" spots could "splain" it to me...

interesting perspective & not a real solution

Why Bans on Plastic Bags and Straws Are Annoying and Overrated

However, it turns out that not only are those bans an inconvenience, they also have questionable positive benefits for the environment—and may actually be making things worse.

A recent study by University of Sydney economist Rebecca Taylor in Australia established that bans on plastic shopping bags change behavior; namely, people used fewer plastic shopping bags as the sources dried up.

However, people didn’t stop using plastic bags as a whole. Instead of reusing plastic bags as trash can liners, for example, customers purchased garbage bags to make up for the lost supply.

In areas with the shopping bag bans, there was a huge upsurge in the purchase of 4-gallon bags. These bags are typically thicker than the thin plastic shopping bags and use more plastic.

“What I found was that sales of garbage bags actually skyrocketed after plastic grocery bags were banned,” Taylor said in an interview with National Public Radio. “ … so, about 30% of the plastic that was eliminated by the ban comes back in the form of thicker garbage bags.”

re: Wader's post above: on Cuttyhunk Island, which has no dump, EVERYTHING needs to be ferried to and fro the mainland. to reduce the production of garbage and encourage recycling, the only bags accepted by the island's trash hauler must be purchased from the Town of Gosnold for $5 (EACH). You can be certain that policy reduces trash volume substantially and encourages both recycling and composting. Realistically, every town should employ the same system. Consumers abuse "free" resources but are forced to think about their behavior when it costs them money.

Poor El Chapo doesn't like the conditions of captivity. Well that kept me up all night, playing "My Heart Weeps for you" on the world's smallest violin

....sentenced to life in prison PLUS 30 years....

.....so does that mean that after he dies in prison, they leave his decomposing carcass and skeleton in it's cell for the next 30 years.....:ROFLMAO:?(y)
