A very bright newly waning Moon with a very bright Mars approaching it's best opposition until 2035 as seen out of my sunroom this AM. If they weren't being blocked by trees, I'd drag my butt up to the roof top deck to get a decent photo. I'll just sit here drinking my 2nd cup...

The first full moon of this month fell on October 1-2, 2020. It was the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon, or full moon nearest the September equinox. This month will have a second full moon, which – by popular decree – shall be called a Blue Moon. It’ll come on October 31, 2020, which is the night of Halloween. The moon will be blue in name only, but it’ll be near in the sky to a bright red “star” – not really a star at all – but the fiery planet Mars, still at its best now!

We have a Blue Moon coming up on October 31, 2020. It'll be called a Blue Moon because it'll be the 2nd of 2 full moons in a single calendar month. And it'll be near a bright red object in the sky, Mars!

I live on a island. How do you get on and off of it everyday?


Broad Channel is a neighborhood in the southern portion
of the New York City borough of Queens. It occupies the
southern portion of Rulers Bar Hassock, the only inhabited
island in Jamaica Bay.

Very cool, the different colors the moon may be seen from Earth, variations due to our atmosphere.

Also, as seen in the explanation below, this month's full moon is called by some "The Beaver Moon". Didn't know dirt bags like me had a special name for it...

Explanation: What color is the Moon? It depends on the night. Outside of the Earth's atmosphere, the dark Moon, which shines by reflected sunlight, appears a magnificently brown-tinged gray. Viewed from inside the Earth's atmosphere, though, the moon can appear quite different. The featured image highlights a collection of apparent colors of the full moon documented by one astrophotographer over 10 years from different locations across Italy. A red or yellow colored moon usually indicates a moon seen near the horizon. There, some of the blue light has been scattered away by a long path through the Earth's atmosphere, sometimes laden with fine dust. A blue-colored moon is more rare and can indicate a moon seen through an atmosphere carrying larger dust particles. What created the purple moon is unclear -- it may be a combination of several effects. The last image captures the total lunar eclipse of 2018 July -- where the moon, in Earth's shadow, appeared a faint red -- due to light refracted through air around the Earth. The next full moon will occur at the end of this month (moon-th) and is known in some cultures as the Beaver Moon.
