I never thought of that, I've got one of those NYS mandated 10 year sealed battery detectors.
Can't remove the battery to turn it off anymore.

Well, that sucks but at least it wasn't a for real call and either your or one of your neighbors houses was on fire!
I deal with the aftermath of fires on a regular basis and it sucks

I think if it malfunctioned in the middle of the night and wouldn't stop going off, I'd throw it in a bucket of water.

I smashed mine on the floor when the batt went dead it wouldnt stop beeping it stopped but the damm red light kept blinking I have on my toolbox for over a year the damm light is still blinking
