That observation, along with his viewing of the moons orbiting Jupiter. led him to the realization that Copernicus' assertation the earth was not the center of the solar system was correct, and published so. That landed him in front of the Roman Inquisition and he was convicted of heresy, and sentenced to house arrest, which he served until his death.

That stigma lasted until Halloween,1992 when Pope John Paul II apologized for "The Galileo Case", the first of many Papal Apologies that have come after that day...
