We converted to gas recently and were advised to do the same, but it is audible in the house but also tied into the security/monitoring system in case we are out/away. The same alarms for the washing machine.

Best $15 I ever spent lol.

I use those one shot alarms under everything.....I have had 4 water heaters . Me and my Pop did em...until it was just me. Last one was 3 years ago...40 gallon cost like 500 and a few sharkbites and even though I swore I wouldn't do it...by the time a plumbing "DOCTOR" got here I would have it done. Didn't even have to sweat a pipe....sharkbites work.

They also have $100 alarms that are attached to the inlet pipe with a cellonoid that closes the valve if you have a leak, this way you only lose whats in the tank and not have a swimming pool when you get home

yup...I also write the install date on the water heater to keep track

Does anyone replace the sacrificial rod? Or periodically drain some sediment from the bottom?

I always did the draining, but they've made it more difficult over the years. Now I have a passive hot water storage tank, so no more need to drain...
