The New York Islanders

Well after years of being run into the ground by a Buffoon GM who was held to no accountability for a decade the Owners finally woke up and fired him over the summer. They brought in the well respected Lou Lamoriello. What happened from there has been the transformation of the entire organization.
Started with the hiring of Barry Trotz who then brought in his forwards coach Lane Lambert and goalie coach the best in the game Mitch Korn from Washington. To round it out brought in well respected John Gruden. With this top notch staff put together the organization finally had a responsible GM and staff which so far has made all the difference in the world.
After the organization was dealt a crushing blow in losing John Tavares the teams most dynamic players since arriving as a 1st round pick in 2009 the team and fans were left wondering what would happen.
Well what happened from there has shown what a GM and staff can do when they team has the proper work ethic and a team concept that every man is important in their role. Lou did bring in 3 vets one in Matt Martin who loved his time here and 2 others in Leo Komorov who played under Lou in Toronto and Valteri Filpulla brought in for his strong defensive play. They also brought in Robin Lehrner to go along with Greiss in goal.
Onto this seaon after bring picked to finish in the bottom 10 in the league this team has thrived under Trotz and are currently sitting in 1st place in the Metro after 58 games are 35-17-6 with 76 points. Pretty much the same group but having them play a solid team structure had the team that had the worse GAA last year the team currently is #1 in this stat. Just an unreal turnaround for the organization. They are in pretty much every game and have no issues coming back after being down a few goals. They are also an unreal 9-0 on playing in back to back games.
This comes down to a coaching holding themselves and players responsible and you hear this from Trotz in his post game interviews. Gone are the days of listening to Jack Capuano or Doug Weight telling us how well the team played in a 4 or 5 goal loss. Now you hear a coach that will tell you what the team needs to do the next game to improve.
We can go further into players as the thread goes on. Next big thing is the trade deadline and would like to see if Lou can add a top 6 forward to strech the line up a bit more for which can hopfully be a big playoff run but we will see. Atleast the organization is back to being a respected organization.
Biggest 2 things we need as the season moves along outside of the play of the team is #1 we get a ground breaking at Belmont by June and #2 getting Captain Andres Lee signed to an extension. Things dont go well in Belmont and i really dont want to think about what would happen. As i think that would mean the team would leave the area but lets it gets nowhere near that.

WOW Joe, didn't know you were an Isles fan

1st off, I'd like to say that I had been calling for the firing of Garth Snow for 10 years. He was a useless POS. His coaching decisions in his tenure were abysmal. Fake coach after fake coach, never a respected quality NHL hockey guy hired! I will give him credit for stealing Matt Barzal and a few decent trades but if you look at his body of work in 10+ years, it was abhorrent. It was an embarrassment to the legacy of the team and to the diehard fans of the Islanders. When he was let go, I was ecstatic.

Like you said, the owners have brought in a PROFESSIONAL team of coaches and surrounded the team with a winning attitude and with a blueprint for success. Just the goals against differential alone (from worst to 1st in one season) is an absolutely amazing achievement when you consider the fact that they are basically the same team, -1 super star who jumped ship like a squid! Think of how good this team could have been if Tavares had done the honorable thing and told the team he wanted to go back home 2 years ago. They could have traded him to Toronto and received some excellent players in return. What Tavares did set this team back 3-5 years as far as talent goes. They win now because of coaching and discipline, not talent. If they had both, they'd be a scary contender.

As an Isles fan I can say that I'm proud to say I am one these days. The last 10 years I have been a closet fan. Hardly watched and rarely had anything to cheer about. This team could be very competitive with a few upgrades on defense, a top 6 forward and an addition of speed in the lineup. Not to mention it would be nice if they could get their #1 goaltending prospect here from Russian - FINALLY!!!

That being said, I like the way they look for the near future but I know with Lamoriello & Trotz at the helm, Isles fans can expect to get better and make smart decisions going forward that will propel this team to the top 5 or 10 teams in the league. Being honest, right now, Tampa & Winnipeg are the best teams. The Isles still have some work to do.

Been to several games at Nassau this season , a first since they moved to Brooklyn .... Plenty of energy in the building ,.... Services still suck , food lines very long , bathrooms a joke ...
Can be had a simple fix .. Extend the outer wall by 20 foot add several more bathrooms and food vendors on that outside wall .... No need to build in Belmont .... Too far its fan base in Suffolk .......

Scupper i had season tix from 1993-2007 after that had enough of Snows lies and inactvity and cancelled them. Once Snow was fired I did what I always told the tickets guy who always called me to come back and that was get season tix again.
Coliseum is great but that is a major moving the walls out. Next time you go and need to walk do it on the inside between the 100's and 200's they opened it all up behide the 100"s so you can walk around the inside much quicker.

Your'e right the inside is better , BUT the food lines suck and bathrooms too .. Games have been fun . $25 for parking , ouch ......

That $25 parking fee is completely unreasonable. Glad I'm not a season ticket holder. Imagine 40 games there a year at $25 a pop?

A couple years back I cheaped out one night and parked at the Community College parking lot .... When we got back after the game to realize they had stolen the side view mirror off the Tahoe , something like $500 to replace .....

Went a few weeks ago with Big Joe (aka Flukinit) to see them play the Kings. We parked in the Marriott parking lot and saved $5. It's also closer than the outer-reaches of the parking lot.

Couldn't see myself spending $25 to park 40 times a year. I could find a MUCH better use for that $1,000!

Yep was there with Savvy. Great game Isles played unreal in the last 30 minutes. 2 big plays the Hyman goal call being called back then the Czikas shorty. Once they got up they never took the foot off the gas or sat back all in the 3rd. Great win some funny chants best was Thats Our Captain when Lee scored. Others included

Well, the season for them is a smashing success so far.
Looks they are in a bit of a funk right now and if they don't get it together soon all the progress and promise they've shown is gonna go down the drain...

That's true but we must admit, if we're being honest, this team has overachieved this season. They've accomplished much more than we had anticipated and we should be thankful for that considering the level of actual hockey talent on the present roster.

This season's team is a CLEAR indication that NHL caliber coaching and a professionally run organization reap success despite very few roster changes from last year.

I see one round of playoffs and depending on who they draw, golf.

We have some decent prospects coming...Let's hope they pan out as projected.

I've been an Islander fan most of my life in addition to having played the game myself for many years throughout my youth. I used to have a Boss back in the late 70's who had season tickets and I was fortunate to go to a lot of games in his choice seats. Mind you his was just before the "dynasty years" but I was fortunate to see Bossy, Trottier, Potvin, Smith, etc., the nucleus of the championship teams. I also vividly remember seeing a game vs. Montreal while some of old-time greats like Frank Mahovlich, Guy LaFleur, and Jacques Lemaire were still playing. During those years I was treated to several winning Islander games and was dazzled by the play of our future Stanley Cup stars.

Then life came along and I got very busy plus moved on from my job with the season ticket guy and the number of games I attended shrank dramatically. Then the move to Barclay's Center really curtailed things for me. I simply refused to travel from LI to Brooklyn to see my home team. Thankfully, this season we were treated to a number of games back at the "Old Barn". So I got to go to a few games again including last nights victory, which was sweet. Although the offense seemed a bit disorganized at times, the hallmark of this year's team of solid defense and good goaltending was a pleasure to watch.

During the game I mentioned to my friend that, being a former forward myself, I really appreciated the play of Anders Lee. Like all good forwards he made sure he was in goal scoring position in the slot or just off to the side of the face off circles as much as possible. And, of course Lee's game winning goal with the 2 on 1 with Barzal feeding him a perfect pass in full stride was textbook play.

A last observation, and one of many good reasons to see the game live, is to watch the plays develop along with the efforts of individual players. This past December I went to the Islander/Penquins game partly because I had never seen Sid Crosby play live. I am well aware that anyone can have an off night but I don't recall any pre game reports on him being either ill or injured. I was quite surprised to see him spend almost all of his ice time just loafing along back and forth between the Blue Lines. Certainly his statistics make him one of the most productive offensive players of all time. I just expected to see a little more hustle from such a "marquee" player.

Playoff bound! Would love for them to get within a point of Washington the next games before the final game of the season. Just can't lose home ice to Pitt.

Well Isles have finished 2nd in the metro and will Pitt in the 1st round and Isles will have their 1st home ice for round since 1988. Unreal turnaround for the team with them winning the Jennings Trophy for least goals given up with an incredible 100 less goals than last year going from worse to 1st. Just an unreal turnaround in that part of the game.
Coliseum is going to be crazy for the playoffs cannot wait for Wednesday or Thursday.
