Well after years of being run into the ground by a Buffoon GM who was held to no accountability for a decade the Owners finally woke up and fired him over the summer. They brought in the well respected Lou Lamoriello. What happened from there has been the transformation of the entire organization.
Started with the hiring of Barry Trotz who then brought in his forwards coach Lane Lambert and goalie coach the best in the game Mitch Korn from Washington. To round it out brought in well respected John Gruden. With this top notch staff put together the organization finally had a responsible GM and staff which so far has made all the difference in the world.
After the organization was dealt a crushing blow in losing John Tavares the teams most dynamic players since arriving as a 1st round pick in 2009 the team and fans were left wondering what would happen.
Well what happened from there has shown what a GM and staff can do when they team has the proper work ethic and a team concept that every man is important in their role. Lou did bring in 3 vets one in Matt Martin who loved his time here and 2 others in Leo Komorov who played under Lou in Toronto and Valteri Filpulla brought in for his strong defensive play. They also brought in Robin Lehrner to go along with Greiss in goal.
Onto this seaon after bring picked to finish in the bottom 10 in the league this team has thrived under Trotz and are currently sitting in 1st place in the Metro after 58 games are 35-17-6 with 76 points. Pretty much the same group but having them play a solid team structure had the team that had the worse GAA last year the team currently is #1 in this stat. Just an unreal turnaround for the organization. They are in pretty much every game and have no issues coming back after being down a few goals. They are also an unreal 9-0 on playing in back to back games.
This comes down to a coaching holding themselves and players responsible and you hear this from Trotz in his post game interviews. Gone are the days of listening to Jack Capuano or Doug Weight telling us how well the team played in a 4 or 5 goal loss. Now you hear a coach that will tell you what the team needs to do the next game to improve.
We can go further into players as the thread goes on. Next big thing is the trade deadline and would like to see if Lou can add a top 6 forward to strech the line up a bit more for which can hopfully be a big playoff run but we will see. Atleast the organization is back to being a respected organization.
Biggest 2 things we need as the season moves along outside of the play of the team is #1 we get a ground breaking at Belmont by June and #2 getting Captain Andres Lee signed to an extension. Things dont go well in Belmont and i really dont want to think about what would happen. As i think that would mean the team would leave the area but lets it gets nowhere near that.
