One night during my then too frequent trans Atlantic flights, the pilot got on the intercom and said, "Folks I don't like waking you up, but you really need to open your shades and see this!!" I opened my shade and saw the aurora borealis in incredible detail and beauty, and I was looking OUT not Up. Yesterday's Astronomy picture of the day had this photo taken from a special 747 kitted out to do aurora research, and catches the amazing beauty that I saw so many years ago...

Had a similar experience on a flight coming home from Alaska. Never saw the lights while we were there, but on the flight back out of Anchorage at night the Aurora was just a ribbon across the sky as far as you could see. A frikin' mazing.

Whatever the reason for wanting to colonize Mars, I will cheer on the Artemis mission when the moon rocket finally propels toward the heavens, my lack of sleep notwithstanding. I will also be listening after the roar of the rocket subsides to see if I can hear Yosemite Sam bellowing: "There's gold in them thar hills."

The BlueWalker-3 satellite has launched and astronomers are worried.. The satellite is the largest commercial array ever, and it could be extremely bright.

You should be able to see 4 moons with binoculars. You can't see any of the cloud formations.
