The stock market

Yes, what was?

No option from Motor Boat
I have positions that I maintain for the long haul. They get beat up from time to time, but over time they end up with decent returns, or shall I say decent for me based on my own risk/reward tolerance. I do have a pool of funds that are used for short term trading or market timing events. With all that is going on not only in the US, but around the world, I personally use two ETF's that can help enhance returns. They are EDC and EDZ. EDC tracks the emerging markets bull x3, EDZ tracks the emerging markets bear x3. So, for the last few weeks, EDZ has provided a return, EDC has not!
Remember, they track at 3x. When you win, you win, when you lose, you lose!!

So you hold equal positions in both?

aint worth the trouble... cellfish...
Depends. If you have the ability to day trade and enough funds to make it worthwhile then I could see it making sense. Short-term capital gains probably suck, but if you can get ahead of the headlines I’m sure that there is a boatload of cash to be made (or lost).

As I mentioned, it is a way to enhance the overall return for the year. I do not day trade as in every day, but exactly what you said, if I can get ahead of a headline, or see a correlation between two pieces of information, I react. And by the way, whether long term gain tax rates or short term gain tax rates.................it's a gain. I know the difference in tax, but income is always a wonderful thing! I pay my taxes, keep some and move to the next!
