Tuna chunking rod

I need a tuna chunking rod for Partyboat canyon fishing. I have a Daiwa Saltiga 40. Is this reel good for chunking? What line should I use? I was thinking like 60 or 80 mono. Need some recommendations. Thanks.

I would be looking at a matching Diawa rod. They have a Proteus Tuna Special Rod. I'd keep it at 6'6" if you're chunking, 7'6" if jigging. I made the mistakes of using 50 pound line on these trips. You're best odd going add big and add heavy as you can.

Lots of fun on those trips. Good luck and be sure to let us know how you made out.

Last time I did a tuna trip to the canyons on a party boat was in the early nineties. Back then I used a 6/0 senator with 80lb test mono a Penn rod. Only used that setup once and its long gone now.

If I had to choose 1 outfit for PB tuna fishing it would be a 50-80lb or 60-100lb rod matched with a quality 30 class reel.(Tiagra/International)

If you wanted to use your Saltiga 40, get yourself a 50-80lb class rod and spool up with 60lb mono. It's a little light for PB fishing but will do the job as 80% of the fish will be 40-60lbs.

Before you go, find our what kind of rental rods the boat provides. Some actually carry quality stuff. Might be better off renting an outfit for the trip and spending your money on fluorocarbon leader and owner hooks!

Good luck

Lots of great info there. I was on a few of those early day with no limit trips!

I started tuna fishing in the "freight train alley" era.

We sure were spoiled 😭
I fished on the Klondike in those years. I wish we had video in those days. There's just no words to describe 15 Anglers hooked up on 200 pounds plus bluefin at the same time. Captain Pete Pearson screaming at everyone from the bridge. Now that was a fire drill

It was insanity for sure!

First tuna I ever hooked spooled my 6/0 senator in about 40seconds. Took the bait and never stopped.

Didn't take long to realize this was a different kind of fish.

Took a beating that trip but it was a helluva learning experience.
