I’m thinking that whole house Genny was a worthwhile investment.
As we planned our house it was on the MUST HAVE list because Maine's 1998 ice storm. A friend in our area was out of power for 2 weeks because of that storm!! Prior to that he constantly told me you don't need a generator, but when we visited him in the spring of 1998 I noticed a brand new one in his yard. "Fred, thought you didn't need one of these?" Crickets.

"Genny" also dictated the home's energy source. Most homes here use oil for their boilers, and since we insisted on propane for the stovetop cooker and needed it for the generator, we went for a propane boiler to limit our deliveries to one type of fuel. Turns out it was a much better choice, far more advanced than the fuel oil ones are.

The only neighborhood house that was built without a standby generator was a couple who moved here from Ohio. "No standby generator John?" "No I've got it wired so I can quickly hook up my portable generator." One year later there's a Kohler standby sitting in his yard. He realized that even getting gasoline in a major power outage around here is well-nigh impossible...

With the millions of trees in Maine, and the fact that virtually all the power lines are on poles, not having one is just plain FOOLISH, especially if you're building new so the electrical work is simple, non-disruptive, and much cheaper than a retrofit.
