Well I CAN catch bass...

After getting skunked 3 times in a row earlier this week, I went out cod fishing with my tail between my legs. Got up this AM and was planning to go cod fishing again, but the fog was bad in my backyard, so I assumed it was worse on the ocean. I'm already missing the fire destroyed lighthouse web cam which provided me with valuable intel on conditions on the Gulf.

Well, it was high tide so I could take the boat into areas that no 22' boat belong in, reasoning that the fish could be up in the extreme ends of secluded coves feeding on small bait including grass shrimp. Turns out I was correct, ending up with 5 fish to 25". The fish were exceedingly finicky, many swirls, short hits and dropped fish. It took my best John Belushi doing Joe Cocker convulsions to elicit some hookups.

At least I was back home having a second cup of coffee at 07:30, after shoving off at 06:15, and very relieved that I've got Pepe LePew off my back...

Nice! You are not comfortable with GPS?

Oh, totally comfortable with that and my radar, BUT cod grounds are in the middle of lobster grounds which means the opportunity of losing rigs on lobster gear because I couldn't see a buoy.

I was listening to the lobstermen talking on the VHF about the horrid visibility out there, and how they decided to stay on the mooring. When those guys won't go out, it IS bad.

And the biggest beauty of retirement is every day is Saturday so there's no "GOT to fish today". I often find myself heading back to the dock if things are not just right because I CAN!!
