What a Day for Toggin yesterday!

Haven't been out in my boat for quite some time, my son has been busy with his son in picking college's and trying to get sponsorship for my Grandson Zac , a phenomenal soccer player.
Zac has several offers but is having a hard time choosing one, wish I had that problem lol.

My son texts me last Friday and says he free to go on Sunday, I haven't been in my boat for 2 months and when I do climb aboard its full of leaves and green slime, I spend the whole day Saturday cleaning the boat and when I'm done I head to the tackle shop for 8 doz green crabs.

Forgot we had to turn the clocks back lol, we decided to head out at 7am, dropped the boat in the water at Milford boat ramp, the tide was so low that I didn't thing we were going to get the boat off the trailer, after numerous attempts we finally got the boat in the water.

Where to go?
We decided to go east and see what we can find, so off we go, water is like a lake, but damn it's cold, getting old sucks lol.

About an hour later my son was messing with the chart plotter and everything went blank, he stops the boat and I am facing the back of the boat, he asked me if we had a waypoint for when we fished this area last year, I told him I had to do a factory reset on the chart plotter because it was giving me problems, recommendation was to reset it. I asked him what did you do,my son said I was looking for wave points and I must have hit the wrong button, 10 minutes later I figure out what he did and we continued our trek east, as we were about to leave my son spots birds working and a couple boats are in hot pursuit , we give chase and fish are blitzing, I tell my son to cast a deadly dick out and skip it across the top of the water, on the second try he hooks up and we can clearly see that these are albies, a few minutes later he has the albie to the boat, goes to grab the line and the albie comes off, we stay for a few more minutes but they are moving to fast for me
so off we go.

I know in my head where we were fishing, 20 minutes later we are in Clinton and there are boats all along the reef, we anchor up after finding a nice pile of rocks.
The tide is ripping, I mean ripping, 16 oz's is scoping out and having a hard time holding, we mange a few tog, but they are 15" fish.

The tide starts to slack and we drop down to 2 oz's of lead and it's lock and load fishing, unfortunately the fish are coming up shy of keeper status.

We are going through our crabs at an alarming rate, the tide changes and we again start catching on almost every drop, my son finally lands a nice fat 17 in fish, then a 16 in which was questionable so we let it go, in the meantime 2 things are going on, we are getting mugged by other boats trying to anchor up next to us, were are into fish and they think they are going to get in on the bite.

A guy 40 feet away from us has been trying to free his anchor for over an hr, new boat a 23 foot sailfish with a 300 Yamaha on the back, yell over to him do you have an anchor ball, he asked , how does that work, so this guy who is closer to him has one on his anchor, tells the guy to watch what he does, he moves forward and up pops his anchor, he pulls up next to the guy and throws him the anchor ball and setup, back to fishing, my arms are sore as hell from catching short tog against a ripping tide, they all felt like monsters lol.

We run out of bait and sit down for some lunch, the boat with the stuck anchor is still at it, now more people are telling him what the to do, My son yells over and asked the guy sarcastically.

You guys need a knife, ???.

We finish lunch, clean the boat up put away the tackle and the guy with the stuck anchor is still at it.
I told the guy to watch how I pull my anchor, my son says watch we will get stuck too, I laugh, I said hell no we got a knife.?
Anchor comes up with no problem and off we go.

The ride home was one of the best we had all year, it was like a sheet of glass, I feel asleep sitting in my folding chair, woke up just in time to see my son break the inlet to Milford harbor.

It was great being back on the water, can't believe we caught over 50 short tog, I don't know how other boats were doing, but where we were I didn't see that many getting caught.

Next week if we get to go out will be closer to home.
Sorry for the long report, have to make up for lost time. ?

Stay safe and healthy my fellow fisherman.
Jay

Fantastic report Jay. Yes, the college process is tough, but well worth it. 8 doz crabs and not one keeper! We found bigger fish in the 40-50 ft depths this weekend. Hoping the temps on the sound dont drop too drastically as they have the past week. Went from 62 last weekend to 58 this.

Hey Drew, yea 8 dz crabs, I think we were in the nursery, every fish was in the 15 to 15.5 in range, we did great last year at that spot, as soon as we hit bottom fish on, but the small ones were just quicker I guess, the tide had to be running 5 knots, I looked down at my prop, it was spinning so fast, the movement of the water was messin with my head, it gave the sensation that we were moving, when my son said it was messing with his head I didn't feel so bad.
Hopefully the temps will remain steady, the 60 degree weather we are supposed to have all week should help.
My motor by the way, is running like a top, in fact it scares me, I keep waiting for that buzzer to go off.
Loved your report by the way.
Stay safe,
p.s. we are probably going to fish middleground this coming weekend.
