What is it like to drive from Florida to Long Island ?

I wanna go down to Florida and pickup a trailered boat and return on I95. Do you drive thru mountain areas along the way ? Is it mostly level highway ? I'm going from Orlando to Long Island and it'll be a week vacation mixed in. Thanks for any info.

It's a long flat boring ride. You will go over the G/W bridge & get on the N.J. Tpk to I 95 south. We do the trip every year towing a 35' 5th wheel & try to leave L.I. on Sat morning. You will hit traffic around Manassas Va & decide how long you want to drive. I'm in no hurry & take 2 nights on the road, or depending on where in Fla you are going, you can do it in about 22hrs. If you want the senic ride take the Pa. Tpk to 81 & go through the mountains, that will add about 200 miles to the trip. I can tell ya that straight down 95 from the north fork to the Sebastian area is 1250 miles. All the toll roads on the way take EZ pass.

I'll probably take the Auto Train down and drive back up. I'll make it a week vacation and I'll visit everything about the Civil War along the way. I'll drive thru the congested areas on Saturday. Maybe 150 miles driving a day so I can visit places. EZ Pass will come in handy.

Panga, If you only drive 150 a day it will take you 8 days. right there. :)

Better go to plan B.

I have used this twice. When you figure your time, gas and tolls, this makes a lot of sense.

Fla to NY and vs versa is a popular run. If a truck goes NY to Fla, they will give you a good price to come back since the alternative is to come back empty.

BoatGuy, thanks for the great information. I went and signed up and I submitted an offer for $867. It'll save me money and time.

Did you ever see that show "Shipping Wars" on A&E?
They were all bidding on uShip timed auctions.

Lowest bidder would win the job, but uShip had the discretion to give it to movers with higher feedback ratings.

You may get a lot of hits. You offered a fair price. I paid $600 for a car to be shipped from Fla to Riverhead NY.
I do not remember what I paid after I purchased a a car trailer from North Carolina. Seems they could fit it in the back of the truck like the car. But finally someone took the bit and towed it to my house. They worry more about towing a trailer as it can be more problematic if the bearings seize on the way up.

BTW: I put the car trailer on and offered some amount (I forget). Lets say $600. An individual may reach out and say they can do it for $700. You can accept it of reject. In my case, the over that accepted my offer took too many jobs and could not deliver. Rather than get bad feedback, he found another shipper for me at the price he accepted.

I posted $867 and then I decided to remove it because I'm 2 months away. When I get closer to the date I'll resubmit the offer. What a nice inexpensive way to ship. The boat dealer down there was saying $2- $3 a mile !!

I drove from Orlando up to New York with a small moving trailer a few years ago, and honestly, the route on I-95 is pretty straightforward and mostly flat. Once you get past the Carolinas, it's a lot of highway miles, and the only parts with any hills are around Virginia, but nothing I’d call mountainous. You shouldn't have much trouble towing a boat unless you hit traffic around the bigger cities, which definitely happens around D.C. and parts of New Jersey. Splitting it up over a few days is a good idea if you want to enjoy the stops and not be completely wiped out by the drive.

One thing I would do differently next time is think about shipping whatever I’m hauling, especially if it’s just a one way deal. I found out after my trip that companies like Three Movers can often take care of weird oversized stuff, even boats or antique furniture, and save you the hassle of traffic or breakdowns on a long trip.
