Win some Lose some, boarded by DEP Rhode Island.

This report is for yesterday.
My son and I , mostly me lol wanted to take a shot at the windmills off Block Island yesterday, the weather was supposed to be fair with wind's out the east at 10 knts waves 2 to 3 feet.
Most of the times wave heights off Block are just big swells and I felt it was doable.

We trailered the boat up to Narraganset and launched around 6 am, there were very few boats there, a hint that maybe I made a mistake lol.
There were 2 boats and a 2 man Jet Ski fishing boat at the launch so we waited for them to clear and launched.

On the way out of the channel there were a few boats headed out just none of them were headed to the wind mills.

We started out trip towards the windmills and as I expected we were encountering 2 to 3 foot swells until we got half way out and ran into a little chop so I slowed down and by the time we got to the windmills it wasn't that bad.

Being the only boat there I was definitely thinking this was a mistake.

We started our drift in a different area than the numbers I was using, the wind and tide together made it impossible to hold bottom with 6 oz of lead we were scoping out 30 to 40 feet away from the boat, I hooked up on our 2nd drift and landed a 19" fluke.

We were dropping fish left and right because the drift was just too much, I even deployed the wind sock, even though this slowed us down it was still too much.

We hung in there for for a couple of hours but all we managed was a nice 18 in cbass, so I made the call to go inshore to some numbers I had where we did good 3 years ago.

As we were getting ready to leave my son starts yelling dad come here quick, dad come on, I said son I don't move as fast as I use too. lol

50 feet from the boat was an estimated 50 lb White Marlin just cruising along , I had a spinning outfit allset just incase this would happen, a 30lb class outfit with a 10 in two tone silver Hoagy.

My son cast several times but the marlin was not interested so we headed back in with my son at the helm we made our way to the numbers inshore.

Halfway to our destination the 2 man jet ski appeared and they were struggling, I motioned to them to get behind us and we would provide a little more comfort for them.

for 30 minutes we plowed thru some 2 to 3 foot swells and when we got to our destination the jets ski waved at us thanking us and they headed to wherever they were going, I thought I was nuts lol.

So we fished these numbers and my son hooked into something big on the second drift, he had a nice fight going on, not sure what it was, I thought it might be a blue fish, turns out he had 2 18" cbass and we got both on board, nice Charles limited out on one drop.

I picked up one more cbass to make my limit but no fluke to be had.

We fished till 2 pm and decided to call it quits.

We arrived at the ramp about 2:pm to find the DEP boarding anyboat that had fish, My son jumped off the boat to get the the trailer and a DEP officer stopped him and asked him where we were fishing and did we catch anything, after talking to my son I see him heading towards me, he asked me how was it out there, I told him it was not a great trip, he asked where I fished and I told him the windmills, he then asked if I had fish on board, I said yes, 4 cbass and 1 fluke, he then asked if he could see them, I said sure no problem, he climbed down off the dock onto my boat and I opened the cooler, he said nice cbass, I see you have a fluke too, I said yes, so he said what did you use to measure it with, because if I put it on my device it may come up different, I had it on top of my cooler and it measured 19", so I told him I have a 48 inch aluminum ruler that we use and went into the cabin brought it out, so he measure it on my ruler and I was just shy of 19", so he said you need a standardized system, so I assume that coolers are not standardized, he said no, they are not and should not be used to measure your fish. I thanked him for the heads up and he left.

There was another guy from ct, waterford to be exact, they made him show proof of insurance, registration and a full boat inspection, guess i should be happy that I only got a lecture about rulers on a cooler lol.

So lesson learned about incoming tide from the and east winds off Block Island, DON'T GO lol

I took pics on the way in, but no pics of fish, 3 miles out the boys were catching tuna, glad I didn't decide to go out there, my luck I would have hooked up.

This was the last trip to Block for the year, now it's time to find the fish here in ct.
One last thing, on the way in we spotted a 100 foot plus yacht towing a 54 foot HCB with quad 425 Yamaha's, must be nice, best of both worlds.

Tight lines everyone.
Jay

Thorough as ever Jay! Glad you caught some fish and got to spend quality time with your boy.
Thanks John, I watched your video on 2 man fishing pwc's. I was going to tell you about the one we encountered while fishing off of block but I was hoping you read my report.
Hope all is well with Doc, is he going to buy the one you guys were looking at?
I may give Block one more shot if the weather holds out, will see.
Stay safe and Healthy,
Jay
