Red Light Cameras on Long Island

I never got a Red Light Ticket , but my elderly father got several over the years. All for Right on Reds, not coming to a full stop. $175 each ticket. It was $50 when the program started and all the govt's tacked on extra fees and now it's ridiculous.
Do away with the cameras and make the lights turn green 8 seconds after the other light turns red. If it's about reducing accidents then this would work.
The Police should ticket anybody who goes thru a Red Light , just like they normally would . They should only issue Red Light Tickets to drivers who go racing thru a Red Light, not for someone making a left or right turn or a Right on Red.

They had those Speed Cameras in School Zones for a few years. I lived on Long Island all my life and never saw a Cop checking speeds in front of schools. Never.

Great on paper, doesn’t work in the real world.

I got a camera ticket in Manhattan for going in the bus lane and not making an immediate right turn. Probably was there was a livery cab dropping off a fare and I I turned I would have smashed into them. Pleaded not guilty and wasted a day in court. Next time I’m just paying it.

But there IS revenue in that. And that's what they're counting on.
 
Man I get at least 5 50.00 nyc speed cam tickets a month

I had an electronic flash device installed that really blocked them from taking the pic but sadly it didn’t hold up

now I just pay em

but I saw a hack I’m going to try
Lightly gluing a leaf from a tree on my plate
Obscuring it
May get a ticket for that
But might just beat it as it’s only a leAf

I got a ticket 5 yrs ago when I was visiting my friend in Hampton bays, I didn't know I did anything wrong till I got the ticket in the mail, I was making a left turn on to 495,there were 3 cars ahead of me, I just followed the last car thru and never gave it thought, well the light turned red just as I was going under it, they gave me a link to the video, I called bs on it and was told if I didn't pay the 80$ they would contact CT. DMV and I would lose my license plus the fine would go up to 350$
Needless to say I paid it. I wasn't even looking at the light just the car in front of me and there was no traffic coming the other way. R.I. has them too, I'm waiting for a ticket, I was up there 2 weeks ago and went thru a yellow light that turned red just as I was going under it.
What a gimmick.

It's certainly a scam, but I'd bet they were bluffing about reporting it to CT. There's jurisdictional issues there that are not so easy to overcome. But it always comes back to the math of, do I lose a vacation day to fight it, or just eat it? And trust me, they know how hungry you are.
 
Remember who brought us Red Light Cameras.. Steve Bellone in Suffolk and in Nassau County now Congressman Tom Suozzi-when he was Nassau County executive.

Both are from the same political party. Local elections are this November!!

Problem with that in Nassau is the last two GOP town executive went to jail ! what's the definition of insanity ?
 
I don’t know anyone who likes to get a ticket, and I’ve gotten mine. Would it be any different if a police officer was stationed at the intersection with the purpose of writing tickets, versus a camera doing the work? Government money grab? If we followed traffic signals they wouldn’t get anything. The question to me is are we a society with laws or not? I do have a tendency to speed on the highways, and will take my lumps if caught. There just seems to be a lot of drivers outright ignoring the rules (no turn signals, use the entrance ramp to pass, etc…). How about cameras everywhere, and you get one warning for each offense type before you start paying?

The grab started when the lowered the speed limit to 25
Then it continued with the Cameras

I’ll take my chances with nypd Any day

I can’t wait to get out of the ny nanny state and ppl that agree with that logic

Just have the lights turn Green 8 seconds after the other light turns Red. Throw the book at the Driver who obviously went thru a red light, not someone kind of close like a driver who didn't stop all the way making a right on red or a driver making a right or left turn . Use the Red Light Camera to Catch those who obviously go thru Red Lights and Give Tickets to people who repeatedly drive thru the light within the 8 seconds.
And Put the Red Light Camera sign Next to the Light so you see it far away .
They should program the lights to keep people moving at safe speeds like in some parts of Manhatten. You drive on certain roads there , the lights keep turning Green as you drive , if you drive too fast you have to slow down and wait for the light to turn. LI drivers drive very fast between lights to avoid red lights . On Long Island the light turns Green and they let you drive 200 feet and make you stop at another Red Light . What's the purpose of that ???? It's like they want you to look at stores and think about shopping there.

It doesn't matter now anyways. Cuomo just got rid of a ton of suspended licenses for people who didn't pay the fines/fees. You can still get your license suspended other ways. Don't get me started on all the temp tags running around either. I was driving to work yesterday and saw couple cars with no plates at all! Everyone still blaming COVid for the temp tags, I was able to register my commuter car with no issues at all, so I really don't want to hear that excuse. As far as the camera tickets, it's no points because you can't prove who was driving at the time, compared to if a cop wrote you a ticket for the same thing. I suppose if you don't pay the camera tickets they will/can probably suspended your registration on the vehicle, similar to them suspending the registration for unpaid tolls.

Just like adding state troopers in the city
It’s all a power play / money grab
States gotta get their pound of flesh

Mark my words it’s going to get worse not better
As the city and state lose the nyc / Wall Street tax base
Taxs , fees and fines are going to sky rocket
It’s never going to keep pace with the losses in revenue but they will try

the city and state are going to suffer greatly

We the public could stiff the greedy politicos if we just followed the rules of the road.

an aside:
I drove TDY in So Cal 12 or 15 years ago and again on a vacation in 2015, staying at the same Residence Inn near Anaheim and driving from the Reagan Library down to San Diego and many points in between. Rush hours, weeknights, weekends, etc. Kali drivers are the worst right ? Wrong!
I noticed quickly that stop signs actually meant stop. Trying to get the other driver to come through after his or her full stop was like trying to convince them to give up their In N Out! Changing lanes on a freeway ? Everybody signaled. Everybody. Not only that, with that signal on, people in the next lane over actually SLOWED DOWN to let me in !! I am surprised Erik Estrada and his partner did not load up on donuts, with so little to do. Littering ? I saw none in Long Beach, Hollywood, San Diego, etc..
New Yorkers are inconsiderate, rude, discourteous, "me- first" asshats and I would have left this godforsaken state years ago if not for family.
Bring on the red light cameras and while we are at it, add speed cameras to all the parkways and stop sign cameras to as many stop signs as we can. They will pay for themselves, and unfortunately due to our "good" neighbors, will never outlive their usefulness.
 
Yea well none of us are perfect
Everyone of us has and does drive over 25 mph 35 on city streets was just fine
No need for the 25 mph money grab
We all have gotten caught by close lights

problem with liberals is they all think their crap doesn’t stink
The good part about conservatives is we realize all crap stinks, admit it and move on
