I just want to know....

I have this halogen floodlight that does a great job of lighting up the backyard. It's in the peak of one of the gables on the back of the house. 500 Watts (as big as I could go with 125V) and it's 26 ft AGL. Changing bulbs,.... well, let's just say its a good thing that my contractor left a quality ladder, and I don't have vertigo.

What's nice about this, is at this height it's pointed at a significantly steep angle, so it floods the back yard without splashing into the neighbor's space.

What does this have to do with "Backyard Critters?"

I want to know what avian critter was able to do this to a piece of glass that faces as much horizontal as it does vertical.

Seriously, this thing must have had to aim at the house, pull vertical and release in such a precise moment... I doubt the SAC could have pulled off a maneuver like that!

You'll also notice that there's no evidence of prior misses. This was carefully planned and orchestrated. I want to know what kind of feathered b@$tard managed to pull this off.

Mom & Bambi not happy with me!!

We have had a doe and her 2024 fawn hanging around our backyard since August. They usually feed at twilight, no pics yet. This is not a massive mast year here, but our big, backyard oak is dumping acorns like crazy so guess who bellies up the the bar every night lately, along with turkeys and squirrels during the day.

Had to drop off a reconditioned plug to the boat just after sunset last night. As I opened the back slider, Mom & Bambi took off for a path into an uncleared forested part of the yard. I apologized for disturbing them and headed down to deliver to lure. When I came back up I could make out the 2 of them at the edge of my lawn looking at me in the little light that remained. It was apparent that they wanted me to get the hell back into the house so they could get return to feed at the smorgasbord.

As I got back into the house I told the Admiral to be on the lookout, the deer should be appearing soon, and within 2 minutes Bambi and Mom were back under the oak feasting on acorns...

Portland geese deformed by ‘unnaturally high-calorie diet’

Some geese are suffering from a condition called 'Angel Wing,' which is a malformation of their wings caused by a high calorie diet – namely, things like bread.

Geese in Deering Oaks park were spotted with deformed wings on Monday, Portland’s Parks Department said in a Facebook post Monday.

Some geese are suffering from a condition called “angel wing,” which is a malformation of their wings caused by an “unnaturally high-calorie diet (bread),” the department said.

The condition usually results in a twist in the last joint of a bird’s wing, causing feathers to protrude from its body, according to the Maine Audubon.

The condition, which is fatal, prevents the geese from being able to complete their usual migration patterns. It’s caused by a diet high in proteins and calories, but low in nutrients like vitamins D and E and manganese.

“Angel wing” is usually incurable, and it undermines birds’ ability to fly, as well as the insulating properties of their feathers.

“You all can help by not feeding the birds in our parks,” the department said. “Please help us educate all those you know.”
