AMEN to that, especially inshore. I use 30 lb braid on my spinning reels, why?? Because my aging fat fingers can't handle any line thinner that what 8 lb Stren is, ergo the 30 lb braid. Do I set my drag anywhere near to 30 lbs? Hell no, it's by feel at there point where my hooks don't straighten which by guesstimation is close to, but less than 10 lbs...I use what I’m guessing most do, and that’s by feel.
I am aware of the problem with thin braided lines digging into the spool but I had no idea the manufactures actually have several solutions. Also, the lighter the braid the more likely it is to dig into itself on the spool when a fish is running under decent drag pressure. Originally we were using 50lb braid to combat this issue. But the latest
lines seem to be better at preventing this. Along with revised line-lay reel spooling mechanisms as well.
Shimano's recent "super slow oscillation" and "long stroke" spinning reels, and Daiwa's "fast" level wind systems used on their better bait casting reels were both specifically designed to add casting distance and combat the line dig-in problem, facilitating the use of smaller diameter braids.
