Firewood

What a great looking insert and mantle.

Thanks jack
The insert is a hearthstone "clydesdale". Biggest fire box I could fit in the big opening that is down to the floor.
There are built in book shelves on either side of the mantle/insert.
I re-did it all myself when i moved in 8 yrs ago.

I'll take an expanded view picture. The room has a vaulted ceiling as well

Tomorrow bringing the boy to a b-day party at a place that has indoor go carts. Go figure
I guessing no way it’s like carts a go go in Hampton bays was

either way cant get wood tomorrow

So after being all over the place for the holidays then running my boy around for a bunch of his music gigs I finally have some sundays free after this week

Hoping to finally go up west and start gathering the wood we cut up at the Boss's house (y)
There's plenty of smaller manageable stuff jack if you wanna get in on the action8-)

Say when my friend I still gotta get tires for the dump cart

Thinking of an insert in a fireplace for the new house instead of a stand alone wood stove so I can have a TV over the mantel in the living room. It will be an interior fireplace but I'm not expecting the heat output of a stove.

lot more expensive - you're basically building/paying for two heating options

Cost to Build a fireplace (with chimney) & the cost for the insert. Do what I did. Put the stove in the corner of the room.

SS-
Mr. Wader makes a good point on the cost factor.
I think an insert would be the way to go in an existing home where there is already a fireplace.
If you are building anew home, I guess the only advantage of building a fireplace and adding an insert would be for either you or the next owner having the option of removing the insert sometime down the line and still having a fireplace??

Regarding the heat itself, I'm lucky in the fact that the fireplace and firebox itself in my house was huge so i was able to go with the Clydesdale which is big and throws lots and plenty of heat. I can't definitively say how much heat is thrown from a smaller insert vs a stove.

My house is approx 1800SF and for the past 5 years I've burned very little oil for winter heating and only touch the thermostat when we get into extreme cold when it stays below 15 degrees for a few days.

Again, not an expert at all but I would think an insert sized appropriately for the SF in the milder climate in VA would generate enuf heat for you....
