something I'm not understanding (well - one other thing I'm not understanding)........................
I know there's a shortage of test kits.
They are telling you not to get tested if you don't display symptoms. But since you can be a carrier & not know it - shouldn't they be testing everyone if they really want to stop this from spreading?
I'm assuming that it's due to the shortage. But isn't this a Catch-22?
There is a shortage so they need to limit testing, but there are some testing facts that need to be considered. The type of test being used right now is a NAT (Nucleic Acid Test) which only works if you have an active viral infection. It does not tell you tell you if you were infected and have recovered. With limited test they want to make sure they are testing people with a high chance of a positive result. If you were hunting and had limited ammo, would you waste them on poor shots?
There are 2 other types of tests being developed, Antigen Tests and Antibody Tests. The antigen test would also be a swab sample, but only tell if there was an active infection going on. It is far less sensitive than the NAT so if you're just starting to get sick, you might be negative for antigen.
The antibody test is important and getting attention at this point. It will be a blood test and the beauty of it is that it will tell you if you've HAD an infection. Therefore if you have antibodies it means you've had COVID-19. A positive Antibody result coupled with a negative Antigen or NAT test means you've recovered from COVID-19 and no longer infectious. This could be a key test used to clear folks to go back to work. In all likelihood, they would be protected from being reinfected for at least 3-6 months.
A positive Antibody test coupled with a positive Antigen or NAT says you've got an active infection going on, but you're starting to recover so you'll need to keep to yourself until the symptoms abate.
Just to rain on all "I Wish I Had" parades, there will NOT be any home tests for this disease, at least not one you could run at home like a pregnancy test. Since a positive result for COVID-19 MUST be reported to local health agencies, it won't happen. There is a "Home Test" coming out, but it just a sampling kit. You swab yourself and mail the swabs off to a lab to be tested. If you're positive you will be notified, as well as your physician, who had to prescribe the test, and the local health agencies.
Any more testing questions? Yeah, I've developed home-style pregnancy tests, along with Antigen and Antibody Tests for HIV. As I retired, NAT started development so I don't have hands-on experience, but the same basic technology is used for making proteins used as reagents for assay and vaccines so I know the technology.
Here's more, REAL FACTS that may seem ominous, but from my experience are very likely. Unlike others who don't like being rebuked I LOVE being proved wrong, but honestly it doesn't happen often in this arena.
- It's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that this newly started "Shelter in Place" for NY will only last 14 days. Hopefully it won't last much longer than a month, but don't bet on it.
- The vaccines that are currently being developed and tested won't be ready for mass distribution for at least 18 months MINIMUM
- Hopefully the quick study in NY regarding Chloroquinine will give promising, beneficial results
- Your best friends are social distancing and washing your hands frequently.
