Coronavirus

something I'm not understanding (well - one other thing I'm not understanding)........................

I know there's a shortage of test kits.
They are telling you not to get tested if you don't display symptoms. But since you can be a carrier & not know it - shouldn't they be testing everyone if they really want to stop this from spreading?

I'm assuming that it's due to the shortage. But isn't this a Catch-22?
I would think they dont want too get flooded with people who just want too know if they have it without symptoms I guess that would slow things down a lot

There is a shortage so they need to limit testing, but there are some testing facts that need to be considered. The type of test being used right now is a NAT (Nucleic Acid Test) which only works if you have an active viral infection. It does not tell you tell you if you were infected and have recovered. With limited test they want to make sure they are testing people with a high chance of a positive result. If you were hunting and had limited ammo, would you waste them on poor shots?

There are 2 other types of tests being developed, Antigen Tests and Antibody Tests. The antigen test would also be a swab sample, but only tell if there was an active infection going on. It is far less sensitive than the NAT so if you're just starting to get sick, you might be negative for antigen.

The antibody test is important and getting attention at this point. It will be a blood test and the beauty of it is that it will tell you if you've HAD an infection. Therefore if you have antibodies it means you've had COVID-19. A positive Antibody result coupled with a negative Antigen or NAT test means you've recovered from COVID-19 and no longer infectious. This could be a key test used to clear folks to go back to work. In all likelihood, they would be protected from being reinfected for at least 3-6 months.

A positive Antibody test coupled with a positive Antigen or NAT says you've got an active infection going on, but you're starting to recover so you'll need to keep to yourself until the symptoms abate.

Just to rain on all "I Wish I Had" parades, there will NOT be any home tests for this disease, at least not one you could run at home like a pregnancy test. Since a positive result for COVID-19 MUST be reported to local health agencies, it won't happen. There is a "Home Test" coming out, but it just a sampling kit. You swab yourself and mail the swabs off to a lab to be tested. If you're positive you will be notified, as well as your physician, who had to prescribe the test, and the local health agencies.

Any more testing questions? Yeah, I've developed home-style pregnancy tests, along with Antigen and Antibody Tests for HIV. As I retired, NAT started development so I don't have hands-on experience, but the same basic technology is used for making proteins used as reagents for assay and vaccines so I know the technology.

Here's more, REAL FACTS that may seem ominous, but from my experience are very likely. Unlike others who don't like being rebuked I LOVE being proved wrong, but honestly it doesn't happen often in this arena.
  • It's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that this newly started "Shelter in Place" for NY will only last 14 days. Hopefully it won't last much longer than a month, but don't bet on it.

  • The vaccines that are currently being developed and tested won't be ready for mass distribution for at least 18 months MINIMUM

  • Hopefully the quick study in NY regarding Chloroquinine will give promising, beneficial results

  • Your best friends are social distancing and washing your hands frequently.

$75. Sunday evening bought us 12 meals of chinese at our local (New King Dragon.) Delicious, so my taste and smeller functions still work !
As for takeout vs. store bought, it reminds me of the Army's and DoD's chain of custody for urinalysis.
From the farm or ranch to the wholesaler, to the shipper, to the distributor, to the grocery store stocker and cashier. I hope everyone in that chain was wearing gloves and a mask. Yeah, right. By late this week I will be going to our favorite fried chicken place. Fries are to die for ! Our own freezer and canned goods pretty well stocked but why delve into it or chance catching the bug from others in a grocery store. Hunker down means hunker down and a two minute pickup at a takeout place is less time than at a Stop and Shop or Shoprite.

Read somewhere that youths in Germany are deliberately sneezing and coughing in senior faces. America, gotta love it, except for the citidiots raiding the grocery stores we have yet to hear about this kind of stuff.

Where is all my junk mail ? Even Viking Cruises hasn't sent me the usual twice a week ocean and river cruise brochures !! So far the damn Guatemalan hairdryers used by the illegal alien landscapers hasn't started in big time yet - maybe the only other nice side effect of this mess.

well there goes the only year round farm stand here - have to resort to supermarket produce for awhile I guess:

Due to circumstances that are beyond our reach, we will be closing for the upcoming days. We will remain open today, and possibly tomorrow to clear inventory. This decision was made with a heavy heart, and was not taken lightly. But ultimately we are facing several challenges. Some have to do with supplies. But mainly it has to do with the health and well-being of our families. We have a family full of people that are highly susceptible to the virus. And we can't risk doing anything to harm those we love. We will return as soon as we possibly can. And we'll do our best to serve you as best we can. We love you all and appreciate your business. Please know that our prayers go with you during these strange times.
