1996 Privateer Renegade I/O to Outboard Conversion

I currently have a 2008 140 hp on my 21 Steiger. It's been pleasure to own, run and maintain (oil, filters, waterpump). When I was looking back in 2008, I read some of the Chesapeake watermen had in excess of 6000 hrs on them. It is so quiet that I have hit the key to start it a few times when it was already running. I had a really bad experience with Yamaha customer service regarding a 2001 80hp carburated 4 stroke.

The 140 is the highest hp outboard I have ever owned.

you guys bringing these boats down here?

I'll be your best friend.............................

Thanks guys ....

Sometimes I wonder if that Yammie "Run it wide open" mantra is a carry over from their 2-stroke days. No one is going to convince me that constantly running a 4-stoke at 6000 rpms is going to give it a longer life as opposed to running easy. I do believe in goosing it up for a minute or two on the way in .......

Damned if I know, but since I live near the head of the harbor and do most of my fishing within 500 yds from my dock, I can go for days without getting to a place that I can open it up, either because I'm in No Wake Zones or I'm trying to sneak up on fish in shallow water. I'm so anal about stealth I don't even use the depth finder in 'da Hood. I'll just make it a practice to head out into the Bay and take a lap around some islands with the motor running at 4600 - 4800...

Two strokes were built to scream ..

'cause I was too intimidated to operate it - no issues going out with others & split the costs - actually guy I sold it to is planning on taking me out on me own former boat

Guess this just does not compute. Retired person living in a very boat friendly area with tons of navigational aids and gentle sea and current conditions felt intimidated? You might have kept her considering you've overcome the initial barrier of actually buying a very suitable craft. You could have gone to local CG Auxiliary seamanship and boating courses and/or hired a local captain to hop aboard and go out with you a few times, including on some snotty days. For all of us, a new boat is like a new spouse, you need how to make her purr and what things will make her turn on you like a harpy.

A little more progress .....

never operated a boat before
don't know the waters
don't know where I should or where I shouldn't go
Chesapeake is a HUGE body of water
I'm 67

by the time I figure all of that out I'll be well into my 70's

intimidated

period - end of story

looks cozy - surviving the wind you're getting?

OMG !!!! What's yer point Larry ? "don't know the waters, don't know where I should or where I shouldn't go, Chesapeake is a HUGE body of water, I'm 67". None of those are valid points for not being on the water. Buy a chart and study it. Then buy a cheepo plotter and set it up next to your Easy chair and have at it. It's really quite interesting. Of course when you get comfortable with it you'll be out there looking for another Boat !!!. Maybe start with a kayak :) .

Sorry for the derail Cappy, just trying to get the youngster squared away. :giggle:

and how long have you been operating a boat?

regarding youngster - we're the same ago there Don - you've probably been operating a boat for most of your life - so at 67 easy peazy - I have never operated a boat & unfortunately never will

if I was still up up Long Island - different story - I pretty much know those waters from fishing on friends boats

You tell em Larry, it’s not for everyone. That the best advice to give anyone considering buying and operating a boat for the first time. Go on a friends boat, team up with a friend and help with the costs and more importantly cleaning the boat after using when you get back to the dock. See if you really like the sport. You tried it and was lucky to buy n sell pretty easily.
