2019 Western Sound Spring Bass run...

Warning:Long winded post.
Got out early this morning and my plan was to go west to Hart’s Island to snag a ton of bait. That’s were the huge school was on Monday.
On the way out I plugged some rocks that were just starting to show. 2 casts and it was fish on took off like a freight train and 4 seconds later....ererrrrck off it came. Hmmm still got my pencil popper. The single hook was straight out like a pencil. You dick joe. Got check the hooks if you hadn’t plugged in a while. Dumb meat fisherman. Put a new hook and casted some more. At this point the no se ems found my fat ass in shorts n shorts sleeves forgetting the skin so soft. Miserable, chewed on me like it was their last meal. I stopped reeling to wipe off my arm and scratch the hell out of them for a second. As soon as I touch the handle to my reel and twitch the lure which was 8 ft from the boat...kaboom hit so hard and sucked it up took it under but missed the hook. Shit!!
At that point I gave it up cause was scratching like a flea bitten dog without a collar that I had to get some wind on the boat to knock down the swarm.
Floored to to Hart’s looking for bunker on the way without a ripple on water as far as you could see and when I get there... no bait to be had, snag-able anyways. Well, I wanted to fuel up today so I said to myself let’s troll up to Beacon Pt. Conn. And on the way smoke a stooge and have my coffee see what trouble I can get into. On the radio I hear a familiar voice calling out to a captain near the Scotch Caps. You ok captain in that Parker over there. Turns out he got a little too close to the plugging grounds on a dropping tide.

Took these pics after I heard on the radio he was ok and waiting the tide out. Oh yeah I did come across a small pod of bait that was getting unusually nervous. Was able to snag one. Yes!!I brought in and sent back out very quickly on me Caos stick. 30 seconds later, it was part of this 38”ers breakfast!! Soon to be on the menu tonight!?

That boat looks like someone placed it there. That is a perfect pic of what not to do.

How true George. Everybody around here are plugging the structure and pulling some keepers here n there. The Captain was pretty good spirited and refused all help stating he’ll wait out the tide. When I got close enough to talk to him he told me that he was going to rename his boat.”On The Rocks”?

That's probably the first thing he did when he got home - a Scotch on the Rocks!

After striking out too many times in a row last week, I finally connected with an 18 lb bass swimming a live bunker in shallow water yesterday as the sun was setting. Also had a few in the 28-24" range playing with my chunks, mostly making 3 foot run-offs before dropping the chunk. Wish I had my spinning rod.
The keeper made a huge down-tide first run, punching well above its weight, then came in pretty smoothly.
Does anyone else keep their net stowed until the first fish is hooked? It's a really pain in the ass superstition if you're fishing solo.

Those looking for bunker schools, I saw plenty of unstressed schools in the middle north of HH, from the west to east end. Did not see a splash or mark a fish on any of them.

Yea I usually hide my net so I can scream at myself or someone on the boat to grab the net. I think it adds to catching the first big fish Thanks for búnker post. Yea I’ve been going out of HH harbour cause I know it’s packed with schools of bunker but want to try east now

Bunker are now showing in good numbers and sizes in Smithtown Bay and into the Nissequogue. The back side of this moon could be productive for some bigger bass.

Latest this past week Tuesday evening drifting with the numerous schools of bait my buddy got this 38”er...fat fish.
